Debit Card Overcharge

So I went to Chili's the other night and sat at the bar. I had chips and salsa and a couple of beers (2 for 1 happy hour). Anyway the total came to $5.42 so I payed with my Debit Card and added a $1.00 tip for a grand total of $6.42. Well, I'm browsing my online statement today and I see the charge of $16.42. That's an extra $10 tip for someone that they gave themselves! How should I handle this?

Should I go to the manager or to my bank? It makes me mad! It's not the first time I've heard of it happening either. You guys better hold on to receipts until charges clear. I guess they count on people not checking that kinda stuff.

Just call your bank. I have BofA and I was overcharged once by a 1.07. Now, I know that it's not the amount that's the issue, it was the principle. They credited my account in two days.

I think that happened to my mom before it was at pizzerala uno(haha). The manager was so nice that he wrote free meal back of teh business card and teh number. Used it at a different place and that uno called teh other uno and free! I guess he found out that the lady was tipping extra.

How much you wanna bet that the reciept you gave them has 11 in the tip spot NOW not 1. I always write in the $ in front of the tip amount so that it CAN'T be changed.

i've exp. something similar. Ate at this restaurant, paid w/ my check card, and it showed up as $2-3 more on my online statement...few days later the statement was reflecting the correct charge.

just wait a few days...should be ok

Ooh, you're probably right. But I know I can make a case that I would not tip that much.

Was it a hot girl that served ya? If so I bet you can;t make the case. I know idiots order 1 beer and left a $20 tip. Mind you he had a couple before he got there, and there was hooters 😛

in my experience, your bank cant and wont help you. you have to talk to the restaurant and get them to credit your card back. i would think they would gladly do it if you make a good case.

You should have gotten a yellow carbon receipt... yes? So even if someone wrote the 1 in front, you could make the case that it wasn't you.

Contact the restaurant manager first. If (and only if) he won't agree to credit your account, then dispute it with your bank.

True! I have the receipt showing $1.00 tip. I'll take it to the manager when I get a chance. Thanks all.

It is a federal offense to change someones credit card slip.

Go and talk to the manager... he will be more than happy to rectify the situation.

🙂
