debian live installer failed to fork - cannot allocate memory

Is that a liveCD? If so, I'd try using one of the official Debian install methods instead. Debian liveCDs strike me as being a kind of hacked together project, and not a primary concern. The net install method works well if you have a good connection. Otherwise, I'd use one of the full CDs linked to from the primary site.

Yeah, it is a liveCD. My plan was to install linux onto a USB flash drive, so I can do tests that way, and the liveCD seems like it should be able to do it, but the installer from the liveCD fails with that odd error message.
 
I think I'd try the net install, and try installing that to the flash drive. You only need a very small image to start, and you download the rest.
