Debian 3.1 still a good server platform?

We got a new dedicated server today, and I asked them to put Debian 4.0 on it, but they say they can't get it to work for some reason...

Is Debian 3.1 still good? Does it have any new problems or compatibility issues I should be aware of? ... should I just do a dist upgrade?

They apparently 'reccomend' we install centOS instead, which appears to be a Redhat clone. Is there any reason you guys can see to go with that over Sarge?

If etch isn't working I doubt sarge will unless you get lucky and have something that works with the Debian 2.4 kernels that don't work with the Debian 2.6 kernels. You need to figure out what exactly isn't working and that'll tell you how much work it'll take to make it work.

I would only go with CentOS if you need RHEL compatibility, things like Oracle are a PITA to get working on RHEL let alone something completely different like Debian. But then again if you bought Oracle you can probably afford a RHEL license too. =)
