Debating politics is frustrating

I have been trying to make some intelligent posts over in P&N. I have tried to be accepting of others' stances, and have always made my arguements as logically as possible, without resorting to emotionally-charged attacks or slander. And what do I get from it? A 1 rating, most likely from someone on the other side of my debates (I can't think of who else would rate me). Now, I don't really care about my rating, but why would someone do that simply because they disagree with my political views? Can we not have respect for each other while having different opinions?

It is very hard for me to stay calm when talking politics sometimes, because I just can't understand the reasoning behind the other side at times. It's like I'm in some alternate universe where what I think is bad and should benefit Candidate X, others think is good and should benefit Candidate Y.

Anyway, I just think its frustrating when people can't keep a level head and present themselves calmly and logically. It's hard to have a discussion that way.

Blah. </rant>

I agree completely and try to stay out of P&N for that reason.

The biggest problem is that people tend to NOT look at all of the facts and instead insist on ignoring 90% of the facts and often use their opinions that have to basis in facts at all.

I try my best to keep current on all of the data, to present it in a logical way, and to make clear conclusions from the data. My posts go unanswered. I take that as a good sign. Flamewars go on around me, but I assume at least someone read what I've typed. But it is hard to have a discussion since no one responds. Thus, I've pretty much given up trying to debate politics online. People are there just to anger others, not to debate, and certainly not to learn.

What we need is a forum where the original thread creater can delete complete posts in his/her thread. That way we can just delete the flamewars from idiots, and have one logical discussion from the beginning to the end. I don't see anyone willing to create a forum like that.

Ratings? Who cares, why even turn them on? I don't care about what people on a forum think about me. Obviously the people who don't agree with you are going to vote you down, stupid as it is.

there's your problem right there...

you know, i go into phases where i try to go over there. after a couple of weeks or trying to remain unemotional i tend to just lose it on someone so i give myself a couple weeks off.
you are correct, its very hard to simply argue the issues. but i also think the threads move in wavesl. the past couple weeks were pretty good. today i went on and its all just people bashing bush or kerry. and any well-though out post is either completely ignored or avoided because people have personal vendettas against one another.
i salute the mods for the work they do over there, trying to keep people in line.

Awww, thanks

I never used to post there, but I got the itch for some reason. Eh, I guess I'll just stick to reading OT. If I'm going to debate something, it will have to be fantasy football trades or the quality of Brutuskend's jokes.

Me too. Even though I don't know your politica stance, I'm very opinionated myself, but I agree with you. I disabled my rating a long time ago because first of all, I don't care what my rating is, and secondly, I know jerkoffs will do stuff like that.

So, a 10 for you.

And no, I didn't start this thread to bump up my rating or anything. I was just using it as an example of a lack of respect. But cheers anyways

Its Politics and News.
But rarely are there any news discussions.
Read a few threads and replies and it?s all the same claptrap to wad through. There are two clearly defined sides and no one really bothers to even listen.

That?s why I prefer OT with its myriad YAGT topics and threads on how much better Toyotas are than any other vehicle.

The problem is a politics forum must be properly and strictly moderated to have any sort of meaningful discussion and P&N is not. Take a look at the Ars Technica Soap Box and what they do there - its a hundred times better. Of course if we did that, half the active members in P&N would be banned including some elites like dmcowen674 and Moonbeam...

The most frustrating thing about debating politics is that I never feel like I know the whole picture. Or even half of it. And then you have to fact check every other persons response. Too much work.

politics and news is only for flaiming. My rating there is so bad no matter what post I make I get flamed. So I go there only when I need some 😛 😉

Heh, I'll give you a 10 rating for this thread. Intelligent post and finally you pu it in the right sub. 😉

Besides there are plenty of P&N threads here in OT and they don't get dumberer as P&N threads.

There is deffiantly a ton of misinformatin floating arround, at P&N and on other sites, blogs, editorials, etc... even traditionally respected souces as the mainstram press media, have been affected greatly in recent months. Opinion disguised as fact and fact condemned as lies. Its everywhere. And it seems prevelant on both sides of the pres debate. And in other debates as well. I haven't been in P&N in over a month but I am sure its still the same as before.

I'm a big Ars fan. Never really got into the forums, though, because you have to be a subscriber to post in some of the topics (like The Soap Box and The Lounge). Why pay to post about nonsensical drivel when I can come here for free? 😀

There are some gutless cowards there on both sides... and that's what you need to remember, and not care and not be bothered by what others think about you.

to me, it's like an RPG game when you post on P & N.

I'm not bothered by what others think of me, I'm just bothered by the lack of respect and understanding.
