The stock market has dropped A LOT lately and it could possibly be a good time to pick up some cheap tech stocks. Ive been looking at AMD and the stock is at 23 and some change now. Doesnt seem like the stock can go much lower. What do you think? With the way they seem to be challenging, and even kicking Intels butt in some aspects, how do you think their earnings will be? Anyone know when they announce? Is it a good buy? Intel is at 40 now, would it be smarter to go with them? Lets hear it!!!!!

I think amd is truly an underdog - they had problems in the past but they pretty much cleaned up their acts and it's a shame their stocks are down.

You have to remember that $23 is $46 pre-split, which means it is still at 3 times what it was 18 months ago. I think it IS a good buy longterm, but there is still some room for it to drop.

I think they have a great pline and will continue to show great stuff well into the future. As for stocks i would get that, but don't have the capital. It isn't the lowest it will go but about as low as it is going to go without everyone else going after what you already see. It will bottom at around 19.5. But you will probably be at work and by the time you have time to buy, up to 33 it will be.

So, is the time to buy now? Or wait? I believe AMD will anounce earnings sometime this week. Could be wrong though. I figure if they meet the estimates it may shoot up, since the rest of the pc sector is falling short, but if they too fall short, it may hit rock bottom. Comments???

Earnings are on the 11th I believe. Watch for Microns earnings for an indicator. If they are low, AMD will drop even more. If MU has good earnings it will be too late to buy in to AMD. I think AMD has a good chance to double in the next 6 months, there are an increasing number of articles about intels blunders and AMDs so far smooth execution. It's going to get really interesting around the time the P4s and Mustangs start coming out.

All the above is worth absolutly what you paid for it and no more.

When does Micron announce? And sorry, this may be a dumb question, but why should we watch Micron as an indicator? How are they connected with AMD?

Micron is going to start shipping AMD Duron computers soon. since they are fairly big investors will conclude AMD is in money.

Micron earnings on Oct 4th. The whole tech sector has been shaken by Intel's lower then expected earnings. Intel has blamed it on a slowdown in computer buying in Europe. (Personally I think AMD is taking market share). Many people believed Intel and the whole tech sector dropped recently. I think Micron being one of the large memory makers will be watched by many as a confirmation of Intel's excuse.

With the way people seem to be loving AMD around here, the future seems to look good. Just wondering when I should dump my money into thier stock.

I think now.
But, then I've rarely been right with the stock market using my own money. Real good track record with other people's though. :)
AMD is probably a good long-term investment as Russ said, but it has also been one of the most erratic short term money-makers you could play. The next move upward in tech stocks may see AMD stock make some insane upward moves.
Two ways to go on it, ride the cylcic behavior of that stock which has been much more pronounced than most - or buy now at a pretty good price and hold for the long term.
I think either way you've probably got a winner, but then again.........it is the stock market.

I think they are here to stay... a good thing too otherwise first we'd have chip prices up to kazoo and then a DOJ investigation of Intel resulting in a Microsoft-esq breakup.

Wait until after the fed reserve report to make a buy/sell decesion. It comes out tommorow if I remember correctly.I think AMD is a good buy but may drop to 21 in the next few days, maybe based on fed report.

Remember with AMD: Watch the flash memory sector just as much as the CPU sector. I think AMD has even more at stake in flash rom chips than processors.

Prior to 1995 AMD was a :) :) :) company,

but they get :) :) :) :) when they bought NextGen CPU & some of their engineers,

then I bumped them to a :) :) :) :) ;) when they acquired the rest of NextGen founders from Digital Alpha.

And, then AMD the under dog delivered their promise K7 David I upgrade them to the same level as Intel :) :) :) :) :)

I had faith in AMD, but amazed of how much investors had faith in the company that post a lost for 2 consecutive years...And the bets has paid off to the investor, where their pride quick jabs is making Intel head spining.

Intel had a :) :) :) :) :) lead in the x86 arena for long time, but now they gave AMD the lead and droped back to :) :) :) :) ;)

Will see how Intel do with the i850 chipset, and when it ship Intel will be a foe to fear, because the P4 is design for mhz.

...AMD main stay is flash Rom befor it extended to CPU.

IMHO...AMD CPU design is like car makers sport cars (addvertising), and memories is like the bread & butter sedan.

Ps. Both AMD & Intel are good buys, because it doen't look like they are going to drop off the face of the earth like .com companies.

A head up for AMD is that they are expanding in fash memory tech, where they have experience and it is still growing strong.

And, Intel is head into communication/networking technology, which could be a paid off because network/communication is just being to grow, but they don't have experience in it and we have to see how CISCO and others company staging them self to grow in that sector.

Like I said earlyer, both Intel & AMD will make money for the investor, but I'm not too sure which one will make more money & which one is faster.

I saw AMD up 2 and a half today only to fall back close to what it started the day at. Will this be happening for a while? What would cause the stock to jump or drop and stay at that new price? Micron earnings? Anything else?

Ya, I know, it was locked because I posted it in the hot deals section, which was the wrong place to post it. Now I am asking for advice in the off topic section because almost anything goes here.
