"Why Fred Upland?" his wife asked. "You have hated him all of
your life!"

Ok, call me the moron but I don't understand that. Is he asking his wife to marry him because he hates her more then Fred Upland? So he is kinda punishing his wife? or....

I don't get it.

I suck at life.
 
He thinks his wife is a nag, so by marrying Fred, he'll finally get back at the guy.
