Death steals a valued optimist in al-Hashimi

"BAGHDAD -- Aquila al-Hashimi, the Iraqi Governing Council member who died of gunshot wounds yesterday, five days after she was ambushed, was a cheerful optimist about her country's future even as she defiantly opposed foreign occupation.

"We don't need any more troops, American or otherwise, because there is no more war in this country," al-Hashimi said in an interview here last month.

"Iraqis will never in their life agree that Americans or any other foreign power would come here and make a government or install a president. No way."

But she also spoke proudly of her country and her hopes for it.

"Iraqis are a long-lived people. We are aged 7,000 years. Our country is the mother of rules, law and civilization. Our country was destroyed for about 40 years. But you won't recognize the country in two years."

Al-Hashimi, one of the 25 members of the transitional Governing Council selected by the United States in July, died in a Baghdad hospital yesterday morning of multiple gunshot wounds from a Saturday morning attack outside her home."
