I have to give the guy credit for coming up with this defense. You can't kill me with lethal injection, I'm allergic to the drugs !

Darryl Durr (pictured) is sentenced to die next Tuesday for the 1988 rape and murder of 16-year-old Angel Vincent. He faces a single injection of thiopental sodium, rather than the traditional three-chemical cocktail used for such executions. Ohio last year became the first state to switch to the one-hit lethal anaesthesia method.

His lawyers, however, say that they've found evidence of Durr's allergy in his 800-page prison medical records. If correct, this compromises Ohio's commitment to suffering-free capital punishment.

Defense attorney Kathleen McGarry said: "One of the things the Ohio Constitution guarantees is that he has a quick and painless execution.

"If he's going to react to the anesthetic drugs in such a manner that he's going to have a violent reaction, either vomiting or seizures or whatever the spectrum is that could happen, then obviously the execution has problems."

US District Court Judge Gregory Frost has allowed Columbia University Medical Center anesthesiologist Mark Heath to review the records. Heath wrote in support of Durrs' request: "An allergic or other adverse reaction to some component of a general anesthetic might present a serious problem for an execution by lethal injection."

Heath did, though, say "it would depend on the drug that precipitated the reaction and the nature of the reaction".

Is he allergic to electricity, rope, or bullets? Just saying theres more than 1 way to skin a cat. :hmm:

That and I think hanging is still on the books in many states, even firing squad. Some even allow the person to choose how to be killed.

I've never understood why they bother with these cocktails for execution. If you are going to do executions and you want to do it humanely it's simple: a room full of carbon monoxide with an optional large dose of the painkiller/sleeping drug of your choice. Not that I condone that sort of thing but if you're going to do it, it's not hard to do it well.

Yes, one bullet to the head (of sufficient caliber to ensure penetration of the skull) should do it. Quick, painless, and by no means "cruel and unusual".

Quite funny. I am heartily against all capital punishment anyway, though.

Oh come on, you know somebody had to say it.

these guys did enough to make taking their life away from them to discourage others from doing the same thing that they did.

This needs to be painful.

I was simply observing political reality. Plain fact is that painful execution isn't going to happen unless the Constitution is radically amended in ways that are less likely than a revolution. Executions in the USA aren't going to happen that are designed to be painful. Given that, I don't see why we bother cooking up exotic cocktails of lethal injections, or even why we used such exotic gases in the early gas chambers. CO is perfectly effective, humane, cheap, painless, and presents no complications.

Early gas chambers were very simplistic. They drop a tab of sodium cyanide into some acid and that's it. It's probably not as humane as CO but it works very well.

Effective yes, but it's unfashionable these days.

After the Vincent rape and two other unrelated rapes, Darryl Durr told his girlfriend that he had strangled 16 yr old Angel Vincent with a dog chain until she “pissed, pooped and shit and made a few gurgling sounds”. I'm having a tough time finding some sympathy here.

This is why we should have never gotten rid of the chair. Pretty hard to claim an allergy to 2,000 volts of electricity!

IMHO, the guillotine is the quickest, surest, most preferable way to carry out an execution. Until the blade hits your neck, there is no pain, not from the needle, noose, uncomfortable chair and its strapping,....death comes as sudden as one can imagine. What is the reason governments around the world stop using it? the messy clean up afterwards? I can't imagine the executed would give a rat's ass about that problems.

I've always felt that if someone is going to be executed for murder the method of execution used on them should be the same as how they murdered their victim(s).

That would've made executing these guys very messy...

Pierre then ordered Andrews to go out to their van and bring him back something. Andrews returned with a bottle in a brown paper bag, from which Pierre poured a cup of blue liquid. Pierre ordered Orren to administer the liquid to the other hostages, but he refused, and was bound, gagged and left face-down on the basement floor.

Pierre and Andrews then propped each of the victims into sitting positions and forced them to drink the liquid, telling them it was vodka laced with sleeping pills. Rather, it was liquid Drano. The moment it touched the hostages' lips, enormous blisters rose, and it began to burn their tongues and throats and peel away the flesh around their mouths. Ansley, still begging for her life, was forced to drink the drain cleaner too, although she was reported to have coughed less than the other victims (by Mr. Walker). Pierre and Andrews tried to duct-tape the hostages' mouths shut to hold quantities of drain cleaner in and to silence their screams, but pus oozing from the blisters prevented the adhesive from sticking. Orren Walker was the last to be given the drain cleaner, but seeing what was happening to the other hostages, he allowed it to pour out of his mouth and then faked the convulsions and screams of his son and fellow hostages.

Pierre became angry because the deaths were taking too long and were too loud and messy, so he shot both Carol and Cortney Naisbitt in the backs of their heads. Pierre then shot at Orren Walker but missed. He then fatally shot Stan Walker before again shooting at Orren, this time grazing the back of his head.

"Following the issuing of death sentences, the NAACP demanded that Pierre's and Andrews' sentences be removed; claiming that Pierre and Andrews had been unfairly convicted since they were both black, and the victims and jury were all white."

I guess the convictions would have been more 'fair' if the victims weren't white?
