WASHINGTON, March 9 ? Obesity is near to overtaking smoking as the No. 1 cause of death in the United States, government researchers said on Tuesday, and other research shows that its adverse health effects could soon wipe out many recent improvements in health.

A report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said that tobacco use was still the leading cause of death in 2000, killing 435,000 people, or 18.1 percent of everyone who died.

But poor diet and physical inactivity caused 400,000 deaths, or 16.6 percent of the total, the report said.

An estimated 129.6 million Americans, or 64 percent of the population, are overweight or obese. Obesity is defined as having a body mass index ? a ratio of weight to height ? of more than 30. That usually means being 30 pounds overweight for a woman and 35 to 40 pounds overweight for a man of average height. More than 30 percent of adults in the United States ? or 59 million people ? are obese, according to the disease control centers. Serious health implications, like heart disease and diabetes risk, are associated with a body mass index of 30 and above.

If Americans continue to get fatter at current rates, by 2020 about one in five health care dollars spent on people ages 50 to 69 could be a result of obesity, 50 percent more than is spent now, another study, by the RAND Corporation, found.

"Americans need to understand that overweight and obesity are literally killing us," Secretary Tommy G. Thompson of the Department of Health and Human Services, said in a statement.

The Department of Health and Human Services began a public relations campaign on Tuesday emphasizing that people do not need to shake up their lives to lose weight, but can take small steps like walking to work sometimes or taking the stairs instead of the elevator.

The RAND study, published in the journal Health Affairs, found that in 2000, 14 percent of the money spent on health care for American men ages 50 to 69 went to obesity-related complications, including diabetes and heart disease. In 2020, that could rise to 21 percent, the study said.

Nifty, Get ready for junkfood taxes, successful lawsuits against any restaurant or foodmaker deemed "unhealthy," and a remaking of "Runaway Jury" ...except this time the evil corporations will be fast food restaurants.

This story was on the front page of the newspaper here in Phx today. Then at the top of the same front page is "Spring Training: The Best Hot Dogs".

fact checking isn't high on the list of the media, it seems

Maybe they don't count kids.

while that would be the obvious answer it just goes to show that the work-product quality of the media is very low

After seeing the spin that Fox AND CNN put on Dr. Atkins' weight, I will always question their credibility in regards to health-related issues (heh, or any other issue)...

Instead of taxing people by income, they should be taxed by how much they weigh. All those fatties would get skinny in a hurry.

How pathetic that so-called grown adults can't control their eating to such a degree that it has a marked and major effect on their longevity.

I think most obese people have serious mental issues. I told a fatty that once and he got super angry - damn near ate me.

Good call! Because we all know that making a dumb joke automatically means you're a 14yo punk kid.

I'm guessing you're fat, right?

No, I'm not. But that really had nothing to anything. It just sounded like a comment an immature high school student would make.

Fact of the matter is...this is becoming the #1 problem in healthcare today.

My mom is an health insurance underwriter and see the number on a daily basis...obesity is not only killing people..it's really killing our healthcare system as a whole and running up prices for everyone in the meantime.

Their are rare medical exceptions (by rare I really mean 1 in 20 or so) where some people can't help being obese but the majority of overweight and obese people are fat by choice and not merely genetics (even for those genetic cases...the majority of them could be much healthier than they are).

I can say this in all honesty....by default I would be fat. I'm 6'1", 190 lbs and in pretty good shape right now because I play basketball full court, busting my ass, 3-4 times per week for a couple hours each time...and I happen to enjoy playing basketball. If I let myself go and ate what I want and didn't excercise I'd be 230-240 lbs easy...and the pounds would add on as I got older.

My best friend was 6 foot even and about 260 lbs...he started working out consistently (Weights and hard cardio) for about a year and now he is around 185lbs, in good health, and much more energetic and active.

Please, if you are overweight...do yourself a favor and get in the gym and go on a reasonable diet...hire a trainer maybe to start you off, keep you accountable, give you regular check-ups (Excercise wise to make sure your really pushing yourself).

It's your life and you should do your best to ensure that it is a long, healthy, and rewarding life.

Its coming.

-edit- because money is involved not because of health issues.

Remember the anti-tobacco battle cry "Think of the children and health care costs!"

Apply to obesity.

miniMUNCHIt costs all of us a TON of money per year.

I'd be much heavier than I am now if not for working out/eating less as well. It's quite simply a lifestyle, and that is why in the vast majority of cases people are far. It's absolutely and utterly no fault except their own, and they can control it if they had merely the desire.

Again, this is why socialism is anathema to freedom.

:D

Don't laugh. You aren't far off. Fat parents will lose their kids because their "life styles" are deemed an "unhealthy environment for the children."
