Sigh.

Calling Hideo Kojima "this guy" is like calling Obama "some black dude".

Fucking kids these days.

He doesn't really say that the consoles are going to die...he just says that games will be played over the internet. IMO this won't change anything except for the way that the games are delivered to the consumer. You will still have to buy a console that can decrypt the data; mark my words, there's no way Microsoft and Sony, let alone Nintendo will let consoles die.

Also, PC gaming is nowhere near dead and I think it takes an incredible amount of ignorance to believe otherwise. (not directed at you OP, just directed at the idea that PC gaming is "dying", which I, as well as the facts, find laughable).

Meh, never heard of him. After Googling, I don't care because I never played any of his games.

Anyway, not really any information there as in how he expects it to work. Chip implant? Some sort of goggles we can wear anywhere? Who knows.

It will be interesting to see how far this cloud computing takes us. Or in this case cloud gaming.

Personally I think the biggest threat to consoles is the convergence of the cell phone and gaming. Especially if these phones start shipping with GPU's that can output 1080 via an hdmi connector.

The acceptable way to refer to Kojima is 'That acid tripping lunatic who forgot he was making games, probably because he's insane.' But that's awfully wordy, so 'this guy' should suffice.

Death of the consoles? We can only hope! I haven't read the article, but it sounds like this guy is off his rocker! Consoles aren't going anywhere.

Meh.

When a $600 (adjusted for inflation) laptop can play crysis at max settings then you will see consoles either turn into computers or wither away. Throw in software/hardware to "plug & play" connect to a TV and you're set. Just need game makers to put co-op into more games (as well as one machine co-op).

The rate of improvement on graphics is slowing and since oblivion it has been "good enough" (imo). Laptops can already play crysis on max, the price just needs to come down (as better laptops come out and parts become easier/cheaper to make). So hardwear is going to catch up at some point.

While laptops/computers will likely always cost more the a console, the versatility more then makes up for it. Try taking your console to class...

At the same time consoles will never truely die out. They may fill niches like handhelds but they won't go away, like how pc gaming will never go away as long as people have PC's to play them on.

I've been laughing for months now at many of the changes being tried on the Pc gamers, cause it's all but announced and they will have a much stronger impact on the console market like the recent games requiring you to buy additional keys if you get the game used.

Metal Gear Solid is one of the best series of games ever created.

Up until the abomination of that was the PS3 one.

Did you play MGS2? Bad...

But nonetheless, Kojima invented the stealth genre of games. Interestingly enough, he only did it because the combat systems that would have been available at the time of Metal Gear (for the MSX) were terrible. He redesigned the game entirely and it ended up being amazing.

I could certainly see MS's next console (or the one after that) having games that can be played on the console or on a Windows PC from the same media or license.

Also, didn't Tenchu come out before MGS?

I don't think that has anything to do with it. I'm not up on the average laptop but fact is most $600 computers will play most PC games at easily acceptable resolution. So I don't think it's money so much as ease of use. Most console gamers I know end up with a lot of money into their 360s through games, accessories, etc.

edit: And by ease of use, PC gaming these days it is pretty dang easy. But these people are probably fed up from having crashes and spyware and weird issues on their PCs so they feel that PC gaming is too complicated, like there's dozens of drivers and troubleshooting they need to do.
