Hi All, first post here so hello to you all.

I had been having problems with my old mobo(Asus P5N-E SLI) giving false error messages and then finally failing to boot at all so I finally decided to buy a new board - an Asus P5QL Pro.

The new board booted fine first time but ever since it will only boot half the time i turn it on or reset it:mad: So literally if it booted up fine once, the next time it wont boot up at all - always in that order. When it doesnt boot up it doesnt beep at all. It just turns on, cpu led lights up solid for maybe 20 secs then switches off, monitor never receives signal, then nothing - it just sits there doing nothing...:\
I have tried flashing the bios with every update there has been but still no joy.
Any ideas would be most welcome - as it is I think I will just send it back...

My Rig at the moment is:
Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 @ 2.66GHz
Asus P5QL Pro Bios version 1004
2Gb Kingston HyperX DDR2 PC2-6400
Nvidia 9600GT
Maxtor and WDC 250Gb HDDs
Antec TruePower Trio 550w PSU

Thanks,
Chris:thumbsup:

what is the PSU? Boot problems can sometimes be the PSU. Could also be the CMOS battery.

Hi VL. Thanks for the reply.
PSU is Antec TruePower Trio 550W.
I will try the CMOS battery from my old mobo to see if that changes anything and also try booting without the battery to see if there is any difference. Thanks again.

so I tried the cmos battery from my old mobo and it actually booted 3 times in a row which is unheard of so far! Unfortunately it then went back to 1 in 2 successful boots...:\
The cmos battery that came with this new mobo was reading 2.72v and the battery from my old mobo was reading 3.04v so the battery definately needed changing. Unfortunately I seem to be back to square one.

Interesting to note though - when i took out the original battery and had the psu switched off - the bios lost all its settings even though the jumpers are in the default (ie. not the "clear") position. I will try them in the other position and see what happens...:hmm:

edit:
Just tried the jumper in the clear position only to find that i cant even switch my pc on when its in that position.
Any more ideas please?

Uhh, hate to tell you, but that's a BAD idea.

Some motherboards will get damaged by leaving the clear CMOS jumper on CLEAR and trying to power-on the board. Read your manual to find out about your board.

No fear, manual says that worse thing will be system boot failure - which is what i got.
Just tried a brand new battery and still have that problem...:\
I guess I will have to send it back...

I have seen this happen before.

double check that the cpu fan is properly secured to the motherboard. The stock fan is notorious for not mounting correctly. Make sure the fan is contacting the cpu.

it is possible the board is borked.

Update for anyone interested: I have just replaced the suspected faulty mobo with another one they shipped out and it has solved the problem - now works perfectly everytime - exactly the same mobo (Asus P5QL Pro).
