death of floppys, zip disks, etc?

i picked up a 256mb lexar portable storage for $60 at the campus store, and have been using it for the past week. i can say that it's absolutely unrivaled in its usefulness. the advantage over floppy drives is clear, and the fact that you don't need to shell out $100+ on a zip drive or have any extra equipment is also ideal. of course, it's also tiny as hell. it's also platform independent. one of the computer labs i work at is full of mac G5s, and needless to say i can't use PC formatted floppys or zip disks. but the usb drive works perfectly, w00t.

i don't think i'll be using any other kind of portable media for a long time. now i'm just wishing i had dished out a little extra for the USB 2.0 version. 🙁

I'd say they've been on the decline for a while.

I haven't had a floppy drive for months.

But I don't have one of those doohickeys. CDs are so cheap, I'll just burn one.. even if it's only for a few mb.

Yes, I find it incredibly useful too. The only downfall I've experienced is with some friends who have computers that don't have front facing or easily accessible USB ports which makes it a pain, but soon most computers will have front facing usb slots.

And media for digital cameras for web pics.

Media for digital cameras??

They don't make newer cams that take floppies, do they? I thought only the older Sony cams did...

Floppy drives suck. Haven't had one in my computer since the last time I did a major overhaul (about a year ago). I've got a 64MB USB drive which rocks, and it's the only thing I use anymore for portable storage.

Even Dell doesn't offer a floppy drive as standard equipment on their PCs now. Instead they give you the option of getting a flash drive instead of a floppy.

Pretty much all I use my Inspiron's floppy drive for. Would be nice if Dell could enable USB drive booting. Never would need the drive again.

i used my floppy drive 5 times last week for transfering files to computers. waste of a CD if its a 30K file and why buy a USB drive when i allready have a floppy and a Zip drive. as well as a CDRW and a DVD +-R/+-RW

My shuttle box has USB booting, but then it wouldn't access my USB keyboard. Booted with floppy and USB keyboard found. 😕

How can people say floppy disks are going to die or that they should?

Have you ever put critical data on a floppy disk and then had the disk fail on you? I have about a 1000+ dead floppies from those situations somewhere in storage for my records I can show you...collected over the past 3 years.

I have to troubleshoot PCs and deal with several small business networks daily as well as performing basic data recovery as a service to my clients.

Thanks for playing, Come back soon!
