Death of a PC, rebirth of the new P4 CPU, MB, Memory

Good morning, afternoon and evening ladies and gentlemen,

May I ask for your assistance? My unfaithful computer died on me last night and I find myself in need of a new motherboard. I have decided that I have had enough of AMD and will be going with Intel, therefore I need a new processor and memory too.

As I do not know what I need exactly are there any kind souls out there that can tell me what would be the best motherboard, cpu and memory to get for performance and stability? My budget is between $600 and $1,000.

Thank you very much in advance for your time.

Hmm well I would get an intel chipset not an Intel motherboard but the chipset. I have an Intel motherboard and it is nice and very stable but no overclocking. Anyways you can look at my system specs cause I go with intel!

Thanks for the replies. I am interested in reliability and performance foremost. Overclocking would be nice but not essential. I want to find a proven fast motherboard.

The Asus P4B533-V or the Asus P4B533 are my two favorite boards. The EPoX 4G4A is a good board, if you need to spend a few bucks less.

Pair any of the above boards with some Samsung PC2700 and you'll be happy.

As for cpu, get the fastest P4 that you can afford, that runs on a 533mhz FSB (2.26, 2.4b, or 2.53.)

I am using an abit-BG7 here. It has been very stable for me and overclocks my northwood great. Its around $130 and comes with integrated video and sound if you like that stuff. I also obtained some kickass ram from BB. Two sticks of samsung 256 (PNY) for $60 after rebate. I purchased my northwood from newegg before the 1.6's jumped up in price. I got my mobo for $88 shipped from newegg becuase it was a refurb but YMMV there. 🙂

If you've got the money to spend, I'd get a 2.26B, which is very fast at stock speeds, and with some good cooling and some luck, you might just hit 3GHz with it, or close to it. As for the RAM, Samsung PC2700 is good as long as you make sure that its A) Samsung chips on Samsung PCB and B) The part # ends in "CTL" not "DTL" since the newer "DTL" doesn't OC as well. But if you want to be able to hit 3GHz (assuming your CPU can handle it), I would get some higher quality RAM since 3GHz will require a pretty high FSB speed (177/DDR), which shouldn't be too hard at 1:1 mem ratio, but if you want to use a higher mem ratio like 4:5, that would be DDR442, which Sammy PC2700 won't be able to handle. So, I would recommend either getting Corsair XMS PC3000 CAS2 or PC3200 CAS 2.5. Or, if you're willing to take a path that's slightly less proven, but might yield very good results (and possibly save you a little money), you could get the new Samsung PC3200 CAS3, which people are reporting will run PC3200 at 2-2-2-6, which is pretty impressive and indicates that it could possibly handle higher speeds (such as DDR442) at slower settings like maybe 2.5-3-3-6.

Thanks for the infor guys, but geez, it's way over my head when you say things like 2-2-2-6. Could you please explain that to me?

I want to make sure I have the best ram available. I have heard that each of the following four manufacturers are the best: Samsung, Kingston, Crucial & Corsair. Which one truly has the best memory for my application?

Any of those would be fine. Buy the one that is cheapest! Also for performance Rambus ram would be nice. As for the processor get the fastest one you can afford with a 533Mhz bus. Hope that helps!

2-2-2-6 are the memory timings, the first one is the memory latency, I forget what the others are, but the lower the better 😉 Corsair and Samsung make the best overclocking RAM. If most/all of the Samsung PC3200 CAS3 can really handle 2-2-2-6, then it could arguably be the best OC RAM out there, even better than Corsair XMS PC3000 CAS2 or XMS PC3200 CAS2.5.

Samsung and Corair are probably the most popular among us overclocker...but you should look at many other like mushkin, crucial, kingmax...they are all good if you are not really planning on overclocking

if you are not planing on overclocking, you should be good enough with the stock HSF from Intel retail package, which is barely noticable...i am sure you won't heard a thing after your AMD torture...plus it really depends if you want to have good air flow in your case and what PSU you buy...if you really want to invest on quiet system, you can get one of the newer PSU like antec true PSU, or Enermax...don't know if you want to put in the $$$...typically antec are much cheaper then enermax...and then if you want some case fans, you can get the panoflow L1As (PM thugsrook, i think he still have a whole bunch, or check case/cooling forums), or vantec's stealth fan...or maybe the new adjustable fan speed ones...with LED's and everything...really depends if you want to spend the $$$...
