Unboxing videos are pointless. It doesn't matter what the product is, its stupid. Watching them is even less exciting than watching strangers open Christmas presents. At least with that there is a little suspense.

My youtube feed gets jammed with stupid unboxing videos every time a new flagship launches. Know how many of those I watch? ZERO. Know how many of them I unsubscribe from? Damn near all.

Either make videos with real content or don't make them at all.

Yeah I don't understand unboxing videos either, but obviously people love them since there are oodles and oodles of the stupid things online.

Good unboxing videos have utility. Not just showing what you get if you buy a certain product, but also adding in bits of info that can be useful.

Like whether they are packed using recyclable materials and shit like that.

I like them for computer cases, since the unboxer will often show things not on the newegg product page like video card clearance, comment on the build quality, show how much room there is in back for cable management, comment on the quality of the drive cages, and so on.

I can understand them but in a very limited appeal. Sadly though, because the more videos people pump out the more chances to make money you get everyone that can doing this stuff. I could understand it as a small part of a review for the product (and even then more of a quick shot of them showing what all came in the box before moving onto the design of the product), but instead we get shitty long drawn out ones by dipshits being paid to shill the product like the billion of them we got for the PS4/Xbox One.

I'm definitely starting to get irritated at a lot of Youtube channels pulling this click bait shit while their main content suffers. If it's not that, it's "teasers" of longer videos (Vice is really bad about this, and they'll do like a minute long teaser for a 10 minute video). Cracked has a bunch shitty ones that almost make me want to unsubscribe as well (New Guy Weekly is fucking awful, and now they've started doing reaction videos of them watching trailers for movies).

I don't think people do love them. I think the abundance of them exist purely for marketing, both for the person and the product. A ton of them are just outright paid promotions, and it gives the person making it a chance to make yet another video to monetize and now this one will show up when people search for the product as well.

I can understand a channel for a site that does product reviews on those to be that way, but even then to me that should be a very small deal and shouldn't show them physically opening boxes. It should just be like, hey here's the box, here's what was in it (with possibly a bit about anything noteworthy), now let's talk about the product itself. Instead its some asshole fumbling with a camera while they fumble with boxes.

Ah, that's fair enough. Makes sense.

If you have young kids, then unboxing videos can literally keep them entertained for hours. My 4 y.o. would literally watch Kinder surprise egg unboxings and the like all day if I allowed her to.

Ah, well that explains it; I'm slightly older than the target demo.

What were you up to when you were 8 years old? Probably something less impressive than Evan.

Evan is the kid behind EvanTubeHD, which is a family-friendly YouTube channel where Evan (and occasionally his sister or mom) reviews toys and video games.

Evan rakes in $1.3 million a year from posting his toy reviews to YouTube.

An unidentified individual or group responsible for uploading videos that simply show a woman opening Disney toys made an estimated $4.9 million last year, more than any other channel for 2014, according to OpenSlate, a video analytics platform that analyzes ad-supported content on YouTube.

People make good money doing unboxing vids. Especially kids' toys. Maybe you just jelly RG?

I know there's a ton of money in those videos. I don't get it, seems completely worthless to me, but they get millions of clicks and thus money. Wish I had thought of something so simple, cheap and worthless that could make me millions!

Sadly, these things are kinda useful for kids toys. It gives you a better idea on the size and build quality of something if the product pictures on amazon suck.

Kind of link telling someone their product is useless when they're making money on it.

The only time I have ever looked at these is when I need to know if something is included in the box. Normally that is for something like a raspberry PI or something, not a new TV or apple gadget.

rudeguy - you never complained about my unzipping videos. And you're my only subscriber, but I somehow have 1,000,000 views...
