Yeah it's the general slowness of windows and stuff with laptops like that over time. But I'm sure she's dropped it before since the screen is wonky and wireless goes on and off. I like the thinkpads even though they are ugly. I'll need to check those out too.

if you're interested in them check this guide

I'm waiting for a x200 to arrive, might be too slow for you gf, try the newer models though. She'll love the battery life and portability.

Buy the $230 Toshiba from Best Buy that was mentioned earlier. Buy a 128 or 256GB SSD. Clean-install Windows. Mission accomplished.

My secondary laptop has a Penryn Core 2 Duo and just 4GB of RAM. It's still a delight to use, very responsive, and not slow at all. Why? Because it has a SSD and a clean installation of Windows free of OEM shovelware.

I think this is what I'll do. Maybe an Asus because they look nice, I have a 128gb ssd in my pc right now but I'm using it. I'll keep an eye out at best buy or for newegg deals too. I feel like ssd's should be standard in laptops.

I feel like they should be standard in all computers

Amen preacher.

Every single day when I go to my office and power on my work computer, I shed a single tear that it doesn't have an SSD in it.

I was recently issued a new Dell laptop with no SSD. I bought my own 120GB Samsung 840, mirrored the stock image of Windows 7 that the machine came with, and swapped out the hard drive.

I'm sure IT would not be impressed if they found out, but if anything goes wrong, I'll just pop the hard drive back in and play dumb. :whiste:

OP, I think a used Thinkpad would be a great idea. I got an X200s about a year ago and popped in an additional 2GB of RAM and an SSD. Best laptop I've ever owned, although the lack of HDMI out might be a dealbreaker for a student without another computer.

I wish my company would allow us to take laptops home. Shit I would be fired for even trying to switch components. My last company let us have nice laptops but I'm glad the desktop they gave me has an ssd and 16gb of ram. And yet at times, still hangs due to our giant java enterprise web app.

I don't want to take off black Friday and I usually hate getting up early unless I need to go to the office. There may be some good deals but I'm trying to get something online or without having to deal with hoardes of people trying to save $50 bucks.

You don't have to do that. With all my connections, distributors and even a Dell dealership I haven't used in years I still got my last 2 laptops from Best Buy right after black Friday. I got the one I am typing on now 2 years ago. A Sandy Bridge Pentium with 4GB 320Gig and 17/3" screen for $350 normally $479. There are a lot of good deals between Thanksgiving and Christmas.
