Well, I will try to gentile, but if you were to follow this forum for about a month and be patient you could probably assemble this yourself for about $285+shipping.

$110 motherboard(saw this posted here recently)
$40 case(ellectroseller)and 2 more bays
$85 cpu(pricewatch)
$24 memory(memplus)
$5 cdrom(recent memorex deal)
$20 i guess thats what this card would cost, but I don't know why any one would assemble a nice system like this and put a dog of a card in it. Got an Asus TNT2 off of pricewatch for $41 recently.

=$284

put that Maxtor thats $110 at bestbuy right now in it and a Geforce MX or Radeon for $90-$110 and you would be SMOKE'N for $500

Anyone local to Charlotte, NC can also go to their store (Vitality) and skip the shipping.

Thanks for the replies.

My thoughts: Try to limit the number vendors I purchase from to reduce shipping costs.
Try not to have to assemble motherboard, CPU, case/power- a bit daunting for someone with limited hardware experience (that's why I'm shopping for a burned in barebones), and short temper (envision fist pounding board into tight case).

I'll definitely get a seperate sound/vid card, and quality memory.

$284 + CPU cooler $ + additional shipping + assemble hassle =

$365 - $20(sell RAM to sucker at work) - (sell 8 Mb vid card), no assembly, 1 vendor?

hmm...

Well, I can't say that I'm all that experienced with barebones systems. Do they boot the system to a floppy to see if it works? And, I have no expeience with this particular vendor and the service they would provide if you ran into headaches, after 90 days you'll be on your own anyway, although most problems surface early on. I did forget $11 for a nice Taisol HSF. But, as for shipping they want $36 to ship this system, the shipping on that case(ellectroseller) was $16 and the rest would probably add up to the original $36 maybe $5 more.

Hey,
I live in Charlotte, NC and purchased some parts from this store in the past. I would not trust anyone who works there. They run specials but when you go to buy it they say "thats for something else" and wanna charge the normal price. :(

instead of buying a barebones you could check with your local store and see if they will assemble parts you bring in.

bargingunner, you are right about shopping planet. I just bought a duron 700 + msi k7-pro 2a, enlight case 7237, teac floppy, 300 w power suplly, nice fan and heat sink for 280 with tax. I live near so i decided to pick it up.
Its nice
Good price.
I went in there to have them test the floppy, because i though there was something wrong but it turns out it was fine. The tech guys there were really busy putting together alot of systems.

Monarch is pretty reasonable for Athlon barebone systems. You can have the assemble as much or as little of a system as you like. Prices are reasonable. They sell AMD approved PS (Sparkle, I believe) and they have a barebones system with the MSI MOBO.

Here's one other place to check:

www.mwave.com

For instance:
B095-3-5 SOYO K7VTA-B Motherboard
MWAVE CI-6606/3 W/300WCase
1.44MB FDD
LIFETIME WARRANTY SDRAM (16X64(PC133) 128MB
AMD T-BIRD 750, FAN)
$323.00

+ $30 cdrom

mwave assembles and tests all barebone systems before shipment.

The deak you have looks pretty good.

Found a new one.

Must get a KT133A board (which are still hard to find bundled), this one comes with the Asus, not too shabby. Now the bundled case is another matter, they sell the 300W supply for $6 more than the 250W, so I'll call Monday and see if they'll upgrade it for $6, or maybe I'll get the black box w/ 300W for $23 more.
