Backstory: I bought this board two summers ago, threw in a 3800X2 with a gig of ram. A few months later (about this time last year actually), it gave a bunch of crappy bios issues telling me the chip wasn't in there, and the jumper wasn't on. I thought through RMA I'd be getting a full replacement (bought it on the EGG). I got someone else's old board. Heat and voltage were issues from the beginning. My old board ran cool, and was only something like .02 volts away form what I set it to. This one is .06, and consistently runs hotter than my processor, even when not overclocked.
Currently: I was going to call Asus today about the temperatures to try and get an RMA for a retail board before my warranty runs up. I go to restart, and it died (ironic). They don't sell it anywhere but one site where it goes for $299 (probably its release price). I paid 170 for it. I kind of feel this is a blessing, as DDR2 is dirt cheep right now, and I have everything but a processor and mobo to go with a Core2 desktop. But I've not been following the Asus boards except the new releases (you know, the ones with the 1600mhz fsb with friggin wireless n built in)- needless to say I'm only going to receive one of those it they go by that one site still selling them. So what should I ask for if they give me a blank-credit for the $170 I paid? If I can indeed get a 775 system (think it's possible?), I'd probably buy an E2140 or E2160 (I want to overclock, and don't know what type of average success people have been having).
Some of my needs:
2 pci-express 1x slots
16x pci-express slot (I have a single-slot 7600gt)(don't care about sli or crossfire)
2 pci slots (wireless card and x-fi)
although, if I get a board with that supremefx add-in card, or built-in wireless, I can do with one less pci slot in each case.
so overclocking is a bit priority of mine, because I don't want to spend outrageous amounts of money on a processor (and with it, a pci/pci-e lock to overclock things a lot without causing problems)
right now I'm looking at the asus P5E X38. It has hd-audio, so I figure I can lose the x-fi. I figure selling my old parts will cover the 50-some dollar difference, and I can just buy the memory outright.
or the p5k deluxe/wifi (will solve pci-slot needs for wireless and audio
so: Suggestions on asus mobos?
any other suggestions?
