a friend of mine is looking for a car. ford has a financing or rebate special going on right now. after going through the rigmarole at the dealer, getting a price and saying that she'd take regular financing rates and the rebate rather than the special financing rate (on saturday), the dealer comes back today and says that the special is either rebate or any financing. seems to me that isn't how those programs usually work. there is no mention on ford's website that the rebate is only available when you don't use ford's financing. anyone know if the dealer is lying or not?

this sort of thing is why i told her to go get financing from a bank last week (which would probably be a lower rate than ford's regular rate anyway).

Dealers suck! I'm not sure the terms but I would tend to think that the dealer is lying, as usual.

Go through places like Pentagon Federal Credit Union (if possible) or others to get rates like 5.29% for up to 6 years. Screw the dealers!

Dealers lie.

They make more money on financing than on the sale of the car. They also will pocket the rebate if they can convince the buyer to give up on it.

Hopefully they're not the only Ford dealership in town. Take your money where you get the deal you want. If these guys don't want to work with you, then it's their loss. My last car purchase (about a month ago) took me to seven different dealerships before I found someone who really wanted to sell me a car. They earned my business. Don't forget, YOU are the one bringing the money. That's my 2 cents!!!

Those specials, unless advertised otherwise, are usually either/or, not both.

The OP said that his friend wanted regular financing (not special) and the rebate. Apparantely, the dealership wants the rebate so they are denying "regular" financing with the rebate. Stating that she can get either the rebate "or" any financing (not just special financing). I would go through a bank and definitely go to another dealership.

Okay, his post wasn't the clearest and I didn't read that last part closely.

If they are saying you either get the rebate or ANY financing through Ford, now that's a load of crap.

Usually, it's either the rebate, or the "special" financing. So if you take the rebate, you get normal finance rates, and lots of times the math works out better that way.

There's no way that it's "take the rebate but we won't finance you at all".

Got to be a misunderstanding there.....the dealer will probably make some money on the rate when they finance it, so makes no sense to say "take the rebate and go to a bank", so I seriously doubt that's what happened.

i'm not sure exactly what the dealer was thinking. all i know is that on saturday, while i was there with my friend, they told her she could take the swap rebate and the customer cash rebate with the regular, non-special financing (which is my understanding of how these things usually work). on the phone today while the last details were being worked out, they told her she could take the swap rebate and either the customer cash rebate or non-special financing. i wasn't party to today's events, but i suspected the dealer was lying about it. i suggested my friend demand to see the rebate documentation, but i don't know if she did that.

my friend is now getting financing from a bank or credit union, like i suggested to her a week ago. guess we have to go through the whole internet quoting process again, though.

that dealer is not getting the sale, that's for certain. luckily, we're in houston, the most competitive car market on the planet, with probably 30 ford dealers in easy driving distance.
