This is a great deal for a nice card... I bought the card (impulse buy, i hate them) but then I got home and checked out some reviews in detail and realized the card wasn't for me. I decided to go with this instead of the ti4200 because of the 128 mb ram and the easy OC abilities. However, from what I've read, the radeon 8500 is pretty far below the ti4200 in next generation games (UT2003 being one). So, the 128 megs don't even matter since the card is already at a loss. Oh well, I think I'll return it tomorrow. I really want a card that will give me at least 2 years of hassle-free gaming.

What Geforce is this comparable to? An mx? I was thinking about picking up a Geforce 4 ti 4200 128MB from newegg, never been an ATI man so I don't know how the 8500LE compares.

The 8500 (retail) and the 4200 are pretty comparable cards. The LE (non o/c'd) would be a little slower.

Yeah, it is advertised as "Dual Displays Support" but it doesn't mean you can connect with two CRT monitors or two flat panel LCDs. The only way to have "dual display" is hooking up with a TV and a monitor. Kinda misleading to me.

I need a card to hook up my two LCDs. Can anyone recommand which card is good?

I'm not sure what your reading, but all the benchmarks ive seen put this card neck to neck or ahead of a ti4200 in most things. Maybe this is new stuff I havent seen? could you provide a linke please, id like to see it also! Thanks

That's the Radeon 9700Pro.

The Radeon 8500 128MB DDR - in the very latest benchmarks - is equal to or slightly ahead of the GF4 Ti4200, performancewise. Do a "search" in General if you have any doubts.

If you want TWO monitors, the non LE (ATI 8500 "retail") version is for you (I paid $129 for mine at CUSA 3 weeks ago).

Thats just not possible for under 300$ you need to get the 9700 Pro, or wait for NV30 or maybe a TI4600 (maybe)

Unfortunatley the graphics market and the game technology moves WAY to fast to have a card really last for 2 years. it took me awhile to accept this, but thats the way it is. I paid 200$ for my original Radeon 64mb DDR VIVO about 1 years ago and boy is it pooping out on me now... its really been stretched to it's limits. Really, unless your buying top of the line, you can only expect it to last well for about a year

The GF4 beats the 8500 in almost all benchmarks by a pretty good margain:

About the cheapest GF4 4200 (128 Meg) card that I've seen though will still run around $140.00 or so. I'm not really sure if its worth the extra $40.00 or not.

It's right in between the GF3ti500 and the GF4ti4200 according to most game benchmarks and madonion's 3dmark hall of fame.

I just got one today. upgrading from an all in wonder radeon 32 meg. i think it was well worth it. I didn't want to pay over 100 bucks for a new video card, since i may be upgrading for doom III. i'm glad I went with this instead of the geforce 4200, since i'm getting 128 megs of memory, GREAT overclockability, and sub 100$ price. the extra 40 bucks for the 4200 isn't justified in my opinion, especially if you're looking for a card to tide you over until the next generation cards arrive.

This is an old article detailing the release of the radeon 9000..... not the current drivers. Benchmarks with the current drivers show a significant performance increase.... (or so ive been told) id like it if someone that has been saying that the 8500 performs on par with geforce

You have to look at the LATEST benchs (the Catalyst drivers have caught up):

Found one of Sharkey's RECENT benchs showing the 8500 Radeon faster than the Ti4200[/quote]

There are LOTS more! And that's the 128MB Radeon 8500 beating the 128MB Ti4200.

my roommates and i just got back from BestBuy in Mission Viejo, CA. They have the same deal. One of my roommates picked it up for $99.97. Hell of a lot better than supporting crapusa. I can't find it on their website though.

Oh and btw, the new Catalyst 2.3 are awesome. They upped by 3dmark score by 400 points over the 2.2s.

Well if you want an 8500LE to beat a Ti4200 you will have to "teach" it to think like a stock 8500. ;) Follow the link to get the programs to flash the 8500LE's bios so that it will run at stock 8500 speeds.

ATI Flash utilities

I just got this card for my wife's machine and it works great. I flashed it's Bios and it now runs at 275/275 instead of its stock 250/250 speed. Just remember to use the Bios's for the 128MB version of the card or it will only use 64MB of its memory.

What's the advantage to flashing the bios? I am running stock LE bios overclocked to 300/300. Does it do anything else?

In all honesty there is no difference other than if I reformat the system my card will still behave like a stock 8500 after I reinstall the OS where you would have to go through the extra step of downloading the program you used to overclock your card and setup the card again. I also don't have to worry that a new set of drivers will not break the Tweaking program used to overclock the card. It really isn't a big deal I just like removing extra work when I can, I'm a lazy geek. :D
