Dell's tossed this same type of deal out a couple times now, but they have the Canon S400 with an instant 59.99 savings and then you can stack a $40 off $400 from chubby billfold across the way. Free shipping too! :) Bought one earlier for a total of $409.10 shipped...was bout time I replaced my S100...

The S400 is the leader in the 4 megapixel compact market, and performs almost identically to the Canon G3, though it lacks some of the manual options. Great image quality and is getting great reviews from the digital camera review sites, both from pros and everyday consumers. You can check out some sample pics here:

Cheers!

I picked up this camera from Dell a couple of months ago. I had an S200 and upgraded to the S400.

Awesome camera.

How much difference is there between the A70 and the S400? 3.2MP v 4MP, 5AiAP v 9AiAP. The S400 is much smaller but do require battery pack and charger as opposed to the A70 which uses NiMH AA cells.

Resolution is better than A70, though if you're only printing 4x6 or smaller it shouldn't be too noticeable. AF is better, and S400 has DiGiC image processing built in. I've used the S100 for over two years now and the proprietary battery has never been a problem, so no worries there.

I too upgraded from the s200 to the s400. They are both great cameras. The s400 is simply amazing. I do not have one bad thing to say about it. For what it is (a point and shoot) it is the best you will find. And at this price it's a steal. I bought mine from Dell a couple of months ago for the same price. I've been hearing that most places have been selling out of them as soon as they get them because they are "that good". Get one and you won't regret it. And at this price you should run to get it!!!

i don't understand why people think the s400 is so good. it doesn't even begin to compare with the pentax optio 550 or sony v1. but i guess those are more expensive, but hey, what's an extra hundred or two if you're spending $400 already?

An extra $200 is 50% more!

I have never checked out the other two cameras you mentioned... What is better on those? Are they of similar size?

The optio and the V1 are both about the size of the Canon G3...so quite a bit bigger and definitely not pocket size. And, really, despite higher resolution on paper, the Canon optics (lenses) have outperformed and thus produced better images. Overall the advantages don't seem worth the extra cost...and you definitely aren't going to notice that difference on a 4x6...probably not even an 8x10...5megapixels is usually overkill for the everyday photographer.

The sony V1 is similar to the Canon G3/G5 in size I believe. The V1 and Canon S400 is aimed at different markets imo, one at the ultraportable w/features, and the other at the "prosumer".

So, if those cameras are significantly bigger, and in a completely different price range... There's no point in comparing them.

Personally, if it doesn't fit in my pocket so that I can EASILY take it everywhere I go, I don't really care about it.

uh, have you looked at the dimensions on the optio 550? it's not even close to the size of the g3. 3.9 X 2.3 X 1.6 inches.
the g3 is 4.8 x 3.0 X 2.5 inches

the s400 is 3.4 X 2.2 X 1.1

and the optio 550 has 5x optical zoom. the s400 doesn't even come close. i don't see why people stick with 3x when they can get a pretty compact 5x

also, the s400 isn't even that small. did you know that the coolpix 2500 is 4.5 x 2.3 x 1.2 in? it's .1 inches thicker than the s400.

why not just go for something really thin if you want portable? like the optio s, which is 3.3 x 2.0 x 0.8 inches or exilim

Wingznut-

The Digital Elph (That would be the S400) is going to be your best bet for a pocket-sized, well-featured digital camera. And at 4.1 megapixels with 3xoptical zoom you really can't go wrong.

s0ssos... Because those cameras that you talk about aren't $389, like I got the S400 for.

I looked into the Optio S, though it's small (the Altoids one right?) I looked up a review where it was compared to the Canon's and the Canon's edged it out. In addition, I already use an S230 and feel really comfortable with how the Canon's work...

However, the Optio S is definitely something to look at... also for the Dell Canon's expect a pretty long wait time. About half a month lead time at least?

I want this camera BADLY. Unfortunately I've been on *2* vacations this month and spent several thousand dollars. Before that, I lost 2 motherboards, a hard drive and a video card. I have no problems building my own PCs for 7 years, and then suddenly within 3 weeks a bunch of stuff dies. Now with July 4th on top of all that I'll be missing my expense check for a week as a bunch of accountants are on vacation. I just can't budge any more. So everyone please look out for the next iteration of this deal and I'll jump then.

Start trying to shove things in your pocket. That's how I carry my camera. Try shoving the V1 or the 550 in your pocket...

The Optio S might be smaller, but I'll take the extra bulge the S400 (both will fit in my pocket). The S400 is an excellent compromise between the portability of the Optio S and the feature set of the V1.

Why not just buy two cameras? What? Why the hell would you do that? Unless you have money to burn. Make no mistakes, these cameras will all be low end JUNK in a couple years. Why would you invest 2X the money now, and take that depreciation hit. Look at the F707 $1000. The F717 $700.

Some people have money to burn/can justify having two cameras/ebay like crazy. For the rest of us, its finding a camera that makes the best compromises (whether that be an S400 or something else).

actually, i was thinking about having 2 good cameras. like, the fuji s602, and a cheap small one that i'd carry one, like the toshiba t20 (it's similar in size to the s230)

but then, it made sense to me to just have one good one that fits in my pocket, mostly. like the optio 550. i mean, it's not as thin as the s230, but it's not that big (it's s40 size). plus, it gives me all the features i need, all the time: 5x optical zoom, manual exposure, stuff like that

oh yeah, having that much money for 2 cameras isn't that crazy. say you get a $300 small one, $700 big one, that's only $1k. that's not even as much as a minolta dimage 7hi will run you

What about the Nikon 3500? It's ONLY a 3 megapixel camera, but I find it fits very easy into your pocket 'cause its so flat. Although its longer, it was as low as $289 with Dell discounts and the Nikon rebate.

I have the S230, love it. I even help my friend to get one from dell for 300 bucks. I can tell you SIZE does matter when you want to bring your camera around the town, clubs, restaurants and other events. And the quality is quite good in my "normal" eye.

I have the canon s300 camera....love it. Only quirk is the red-level...tends to make rich reds over bright.....but it's easy to correct in photoshop.

I'm probably going to pick up a s400 as my s300 is about 2 years old and has shot easily 2000 pictures. I figure it'll cost me about $100 to upgrade from a s300 to a s400. Sell s300 on eBay, buy s400. :)

I have an S200 and got a chance to try out a friend's S400. The S400 blows mine out of the water. The internal processing is much faster, and the LCD viewfinder is sharp and fluid (the S200 is grainy and choppy in comparison). Along with 2x the resolution and better zoom, I think it's a worthy upgrade. Too bad I can't afford it without selling off a bunch of my stuff right now.
