Wired or wireless?

If wired - do not use home made cables, make sure NIC is set to auto detect speed/duplex, make sure speed duplex on modem and router WAN port are set to autonegotiate speed/duplex
If wireless - change channels to 1, 6 or 11. Wireless is very flaky and slow depending on your environment.
