Dead: WDC 1TB hard drive at Buy.com for $189.99 shipped

DarphB let me know about this:

Says full 3-year warranty.

Edit: Appears to be a Cavalry bundle (as opposed to a bare OEM WDC drive).

These are great storage drives, but the new 320GB platter drives will be much better performers.

Can't beat this drive, though, as your PVR drive in an HTPC. 🙂

Edit: Site has been edited (as of late CST 3-20-08) and no longer indicates that this is a WD10EACS or that it has a 3-year warranty.

This is beyond hot if you need drive right now. The next lowest price is from ZZF at $224 shipped. It is actually really painful for me because I planned building storage server with these drives, but not for another couple of months. So I have dilemma, how much prices are going to come down in the next couple of months. If I buy now and prices remain higher in 2 months, I win, if they go down, I lose. If I don't buy now and prices remain the same, I again lose. You get the picture...

Anybody knows what's the warranty on these particular drive being sold from buy.com? Buy.com says 3 years, but it looks like on OEM drive, what's WD policy on OEM drives?

Newegg customer review of different Calvary hard drive, but I bought a "new" Fantom external hard drive from Buy.com a couple years ago, and Windows identified drive as MDT MD-25 (MDT may be Magnetic Data Technologies, a Taiwan company that sells refurbished hard drives):

"Wonder why it's cheap?

Tech Level: high - Ownership: 1 month to 1 year
Pros: Worked ok for about 9 months
Cons: We purchased 6 of these drives and 3 of them gave us problems and after 9 months one just died. We opened them up to check out the drives and they are refurbished maxtor drives.
Other Thoughts: I think it is decieving for a company to sell a NEW product made with refurbished parts. BUYER BEWARE!!! I would recommend something else"

I'm tempted to purchase, but I don't like the off brand name.

First, I do not believe Maxtor makes 1TB hard drives. And even if they do, if you click specifications tab at buy.com it clearly states WD10EACS drive.

I bought one and buy.com or cavalry better not think they can get away with anything resembling bait and switch.

Nope. The GP series' say they have Intellipower which would lead you to believe that it's variable RPM but various reviews of the 750GB and 1GB GP series drives reveal there is no variability in the drive speed.

The "GP" drives are "green." Lower RPM, lower performance, less sucking off of the power supply.
This is perfect for a NAS box or USB drive. Not good for a primary system drive.

If only I had the money, I would get two. I am trying to build a NAS RAID-1 box, but the drives are definately going to hurt my wallet.

I think it's a fixed 5400 rpm hard drive whose 250 GB platters allow it to approximate 7200 rpm performance.

I've got one and I also have a WD3200KS (7200 rpm and 105 GB platters) and the Green Power feels both faster and snappier than the 7200 rpm drive.

I couldn't resist. I bought one today after seeing the thread at fatwallet. $169.99 shipped with the special $20 off $80 buy.com GCO promotion.

Not anymore it doesn't! I'm starting to worry.

Just checked, yes, they did remove that info. So who knows what they are going to ship now.

Above Newegg customer review was for a different external Calvary hard drive.

That being said, Buy.com has removed WD model number and 5400 - 7200 rpm spec.

I suspect that people will get a hodgepodge of hard drives, and I wouldn't be surprised if some of them are indeed recertified.

Interesting to see how Buy will honor cancellations for their deceptive sales practice.

EDIT: I was so tempted to buy yesterday, but concerns about Buy.com's customer service if anything goes wrong, in addition to wondering how this potential bare hard drive would be shipped (unboxed bare drive just thrown in box with some air bubble "padding"?) luckily stopped me.

Ugh... been looking for TB drive from my multimedia system so I pulled the trigger along with the Google Checkout $20 coupon which made it very HAWT! I hope I don't get screwed by buy.com.

Thread edited.

Credit card disputes are a wonderful thing...

We'll have to see what comes. I have yet to have a problem with Buy.com, but there's always a first time.

Edit: Check your order confirmation(s). Mine says:

sku: 206895079
description: 1TB SATA, 16MB, High Speed (WD10EACS) Internal Hard Drive with Full Feature Backup Software

Pretty clear on what I should be receiving. 🙂

Yea, I noticed they removed the model number off their site. Never had problems with Buy either so will wait and see, I see it shipped today. Until we start getting them no one knows why they removed the number, Maybe some now are going to have a new model WD drive in it. I really don't see them sending you a refurbed drive as it is law that it needs to be stated as such.

I've heard some pretty bad things about buy.com, but those are mostly rebate and customer service related issues, hopefully I receive the WD drive and not some POS drive

Tempting now that I am building a server around 2008 with Hyper V. 1TB of storage would be very nice to virtualize my home network.
