Been looking for a 1TB drive to throw in my water cooled rig before I sell it on craigslist. Was eyeing them at Amazon but was hesitant to order one due to possible damage in shipping.

Update 3/13 Staples dropped the price another $10 which makes the deal even better. $79.99 with free shipping.

Found some info on the HDD in question. Looks like it's a crap shoot of old vs new inventory with some luck mixed in also.

From what I gather, I think that the WDBAAZ0010HNC-NRSN Caviar Black drive is not made by WD anymore. It has been replaced by the WD1002FAEX (6Gbps,64MB cache) and the WD1001FALS (3Gbps,32MB cache)

At the moment, Best Buy still has a listing for the WDBAAZ0010HNC-NRSN Caviar Black drive. I'm assuming that if you order this drive from Best Buy, you will get the WD1001FALS drive. However, I just purchased the WD Black (6Gbps,64MB cache) drive from Best Buy and the model # on the BOX showed WDBAAZ0010HNC-NRSN, but when I opened it, I had the WD1002FAEX which is what I wanted.

I bought dozens and dozens of them and never had a failure, tho one bought dated just after the flood worked but had a vibration, and they (Amazon) replaced it.

Amazon puts all HDD in a special sized box with 2 black plastic endcaps, so I seriously doubt that you would get shipping damage from Amazon on a HDD order.

I am not 100% knowledgeable on HDD but this is the SATA 3.0Gb/s 32MB cache not the SATA 6.0Gb/s 64MB cache which Newegg has for $10 more for the same size (1 TB). Oddly enough the 32MB cache version, the one on sale for $89 @staples is $119 at newegg

It's a valid concern, but as always YMMV.

I ordered two HDD's Christmas before last that were packaged exactly as you describe. Problem was that they then put both HDD's in a box ten times that size with nothing but a piece of kraft paper, a flat one! Amazon's packaging is almost consistently bad, I wish you could have seen the beer mug set my co-worker just ordered. Glass....no packing, yeah, that will work!

Wow....Guess these are not moving fast enough for Staples as they just dropped the price another $10. Hard to beat deal for a WD Black drive. I'm not sure what version of drive is at Staples Sata 3GB/s or Sata 6GB/s but if you have a Best Buy local just price match.

I think all the confusion starts from the source it looks like. I'm not sure what drive is suppost to be in the box or if it's one of those crap shoot deals that sometimes pop up with HDD....As in get what you paid for or get a bump in specs for the same price....Image looks just like the one I price matched at Best Buy and it was a 64MB SATA6G FAEX model in the box.

Here's a link to the WD store with the full part number. If you read the specs it states cache up to 64mb's but if you look at the specs it states Sata 3GB/s ??? Viewing the image of the box if you look at the lower left corner it states Sata 6GB/s which would be the 64MB SATA6G FAEX model.

I can see where going to BestBuy in person and "price matching" might cause a less than knowledgeable salesman to bring out the later drive by mistake, not knowing there are 2 varieties.
But that does not explain you geting an FAEX.
The only possible explanation is that the 32MB cache drive is no longer made, as was posted, and is either being substituted for IN BOX or being upgraded at point of sale.
Possibly even the vendors are unawares of this situation.
In any case, an FAEX (on HDD label) for $80 shipped is a hella deal, either OEM in bag or Retail in box.

Retail-boxed HDs have model codes on them, but generally they are NOT exact drive model codes, but rather a SKU for a retail-boxed drive of a certain family, RPM, and capacity.

So when a HDD mfg phases out one drive, for another new one, they just start putting the newer drive in the older boxes. Happens all the time with retail-boxed drives.

When to pickup mine today, Thursday, and the fools at the warehouse put the retail box in another twice as big box, with no packing material. I insisted on opening the shipping box, (someone at the warehouse barely got tape on the top seam, swiped the tape gun and missed 1/3 of the seam), and the retail box inside had at least 2 corners bashed in. Damage that certainly had to happen before it was put in the shipping box. Assist. Manager at the store called the warehouse and a courier will deliver another one to Staples. Staples packaging was lousy, with no packing material. Open the shipping box in the store, if you do a pickup. You might have a HD box customized by a forklift truck inside, no extra charge.
