Dead video card?

I turned on my computer this morning, and everything seemed fine, but there's no video signal. No BIOS information, no POST, nothing. The computer makes it into Windows, just without any video at all. My motherboard doesn't give any errors - it just boots up normally. I think I already know the answer, but is my video card dead? Or is there anything I can do before going to buy a new one?

The card is a Gigabyte x800 with the silent heat-pipe cooler. The card has VGA and DVI, neither of which are putting out any signal.

What's the Motherboard ?

On mine, in BIOS there's an option for selecting Video output - PCIex or PCI. If set to PCI there will be no Video as there is no PCI Video card.

I had this happen once when it was set to "Auto". I had to shutdown everything and turn off the PSU in the back so no power was feed to the MB. When I turned things back on fortunately the Video was restored so I went into BIOS and manually set it for PCIex.

You may possiblely have the same thing going on.

The motherboard is an EPoX 9NPA+ Ultra. I've reset the computer and reseated the video card multiple times to no avail. I reset the CMOS just in case, and still nothing.

How do you know it's getting to Windows, is it getting the Windows sound?

I had a similar thing happen a couple months back, but it was a dead MB - no Windows sound though, and no LAN activity lights on the MB.

Yeah, it plays the Windows sound and the hard drive spins up as normal. The only thing out of the ordinary is the total lack of video signal. I'm about 99.9% committed to driving down to Fry's in a bit to by a new one, unless anyone has any other ideas.

It happens every now and then when you play with some settings.

For instance I installed Vista and set my monitor refresh rate to 70 and the screen after a reboot would be pure black and it was going into windows. Reformat before buying more stuff and waste $$$$
