I have 2 dilemas to discuss

Dilema #1: My story begins when i bought a NV Silencer 5 rev.2 from svc, anyways i got it in today and followed the precise intructions provided and from this site here- http://www.ocia.net/reviews/nvs52/page1.shtml . Anyways when cleaned the surface and installed everything tightly i noticed that one thermal pad from the ram wasnt fully making contact. Even after taking apart and reinstalling the cooler it still wasnt on right, but i thought no big deal if everything else is on right. So i stick it in my rig and bootup and no video comes out.....i start to panic and wonder what ive done wrong and even booted up a couple more times to make sure. So anyways i remove my card and i notice that the core wasnt making very good contact with the heatsink at all? I guess with all my worrying about the ram chips being with good contact i overlooked the contact with the core. Here is when i notice that the copper plate itself isnt balanced to begin with....so its a manufacturer problem. So anyways i tried everything to revive it, putting back on the old cooler but still nothing. I am confident my pc is still fine because i installed an old radeon 9000 and it booted up just fine. So if any of you guys have any suggestions to how to revive my card, please tell?

Dilema #2: Now if my card has actually died i need to purchase a new one. should i go with an x850xt for $240 or 7800gs for $270? Or should i move on to pci-e? Because technically i am not stuck on an agp platform however im trying to keep my costs under $300-$350. But i was originally planning on waiting for conroe which is scheduled for release Q3 2006. But there is no way i am buying and high end agp card now and upgrading to conroe later. If i did go pci-e now what would my options be? And is it possible to throw in a 7600gt for under $350 cpu/mobo included?

Edit:Now that i think about it its technically AC fault for supplying me a faulty cooler, that killed my card. If i contact them about my problem would they just send me a replacement cooler?

i dont think there is much you can do to revive the card, seems burnt/dead

as far as a replacement, i would go with pci-e:

Monarch has the opty 144 for $120 shipped,
find yourseld a $80 mobo on FS/FT
Put the rest to a video card, although you may come up slighlty short for the 7600GT

AC won't do anything, its your fault it died.

Can't speak to upgrading the Intel platform. You want cheap, either go with a low end single core A64 Socket 939 + cheap mobo or the Intel Pentium D 805 dual core + cheap mobo.

I forgot to mention there is no visual markings on the card indicating that the card had burnt out nor did i smell anything, and the fan still works...:) Im just trying to see if there is anyway my card is still alive. As for the upgrade options the opty 144 is only at 1.8ghz...i dont really want to overclock it because im both inexperienced in oc'ing AMD's and terrified that i might destroy my cpu because ive heard you need to up the voltages. Will this offer me enough performance for 2 more years? And ive been thinking some more about the 7800gs co, if i purchase the 7800gs i can keep my current system for another 8-10months if i oc 500/1400 maybe for another 12. Which then i will have enough money to upgrade my whole system to conroe and i get to see the real performance gap between AM2 and conroe. Does this make sense to anyone? Or am i being dumb to sped $270 on a 7800gs for agp, and should just go pci-e? Im just worried the performance i will get upgrading to a budget s939+mobo will not satisfy my future gaming needs.

There are no reviews between the 7800gs and the 7600gt but i found 2 similiar review on FS:
7600gt- http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/nvi...eforce_7600_gt_performance/default.asp
7800gs co- http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/evg...00_gs_co_superclock_review/default.asp
The 7800gs co outperforms the 7600gt in every benchmark, most of the 7600gt ones only use 4xaa/8xaf while the 7800gs uses 4xaa/16xaf and still wins everybench.

Many systems are still steaming along with S754+AGP. Even if you started with a low-end single core AMD, you'll still have the headroom for a dualcore later on. Just like they didn't abandon Socket A right away with the advent of the A64, I don't think they'll isolate the rather substantial S939 market when they shift to AM2.

Oh, and how much for your dead Ultra? I need a new keychain.

You say there steaming along but will this solution keep me happily for 2yrs? I pretty sure it wont....we are in a day in age where cpu performance is critical when gaming. You saw how conroe demolished the FX60 by 40-50fps with no oc on the gpu, not to mention that dual core is on the rise, probably a standard in a yr or so. I dont really have the cash to keep upgrading now and later to keep swapping cpu's for s939. Thats why ide rather upgrade to a 7800gs co now and in 10 months or so go the way of conroe and never look back. I just need peoples opinions on this and i respect your advice, this is just me clearing up what i want and can and cant afford. So that not only you but other viewers to take this into account. So now after that being said thoughts on me going pci-e now with probably a lowly AMD(3000+/3200+)+cheap pci-e mobo+7600gs? Or buy a 7800gs now and in a 10 months upgrade to conroe?

-Also just to let you know I only plan on getting the 7600gs now and probably stepping up in a couple months to a 7600gt or 7800gt when i have the cash.

The opterons usually OC well even on stock voltage. My opty 165 goes from stock 1.8ghz to 2.4ghz, using default voltage. Some go even higher than that. Don't waste money on the x850xt or the 7800gs, because you'd definitely get better cards for that money on pci-e. If you insist on getting conroe, then you could get a new pci-e mobo that supposedly will be compatible with conroe, and a cheap P4 to hold over until then.

Is conroe supposed to use LGA 775? Can you post where you found this info on?

Edit:Nvm i found out Conroe does come on LGA775, but requires i975X with a modified VRM,
but no announcement that it'll work on i955X or i955XE yet. Ide rather not take the chance.

Bump for anymore opinions? After this whole day of thinking about it I think im going to just buy the EVGA 7800gs co at monarch for $266.48 which includes a free copy of AOE:3. Because my situation is not as easy as getting a new amd cpu+new mobo with agp/pci-e. I also have to put up cash for the videocard itself which i want equal or better performance than my last gpu, which i have no where near the cash as of now. Ask me to save? Well then why not just keep saving and saving from gen to gen? So with this card ill squeeze a years best out of it.....hopefully some minor performance gains from new drivers. Thx for all the help guys, if anyone has anything still to say that would be a valid arguement to change my mind please post. I wont be buying probably till this weekend.

Just get a 7800gs. It should be a nice card, though not much of an upgrade from your 6800ultra. With some OCing, maybe you'll notice a difference. I dont know, I've not looked into it.

Though, I wouldnt get a x850, just because it's lacking Sm3, unlike the 6 or 7 series...which upcoming games should take advantage of. Might as well have it.

geez ive posted alot in my own thread. :) But from reviews i calculated the fps gains from a 6800u to a 7800gs:
All at res 1280x1024 (AA/AF settings alter for games but same for cards)
Q4- 20fps gain
F.E.A.R- 7fps gain
HL2:LC- 16.5fps gain
BF2- 21.6fps gain
COD2- 6.8fps gain
SS2- 12.8fps gain
FC/HDR- 25fps gain
HL2- 26.18fps gain
With a decent oc im sure the gains could be larger. Its an okay upgrade i guess........
