My biggest concern is the Verbatrim Rebate. The last one was one of the first ones I sent in this past Summer. It was mailed in early August and took until the end of December to get it - and that was only after four or five emails, three of four FAX's, and more than that in phone calls. It was only after I sent an email to Staples Corporate that it arrived. Heck, they even changed the rules in midstream and asked for a serial number which wasn't required on the original rebate forms!

Of course, your mileage may vary, but be prepared for delays on the Verbatrim. Hopefully, whoever pays the rebates from OfficeMax will be better, but don't count on it and make sure you make several excellent copies of ALL forms and the like.

As usual, excellent post. You have to be a teacher, to take the time and effort for all those links. :)

I heard the Verbatim was not so good, and not supported under PrimoDVD software, which a lot of PS2 Archiver's use. I'm actually looking for a Cendyne A03 or A04 DVD-RW/R (which is really a repackaged Pioneer). I guess a lot of PS2 people use it and swear by it. Good luck Nickel.

This is a dvd+rw drive and does not record dvd-r media (there is a difference). To the best of my knowledge only the v7 (the newest) playstation 2's read dvd+rw media. So if you have an older ps2, buy a dvd-rw drie instead. Hope this helps

From what I've read, DVD+R is the new standard and has a higher reflectivity and different coatings, allowing it to be burned at higher speeds and still be read properly. The new V7 PS2's have weaker laser outputs than previous versions, so they benefit from the higher reflectivity of the DVD+R's.

DVD+R should work fine in a older PS2, and they are more available than DVD-R. However, DVD-R drives and media are cheaper, if you can find them.

I did not read very good reviews on this Verbatim drive, and even though the price of $150 looks like you can't pass it up, I'm passing :(

BTW: I do not see the price listed lower than $299. And the rebates I see are $60 IR, and $40 MR...which puts it at $199+tax.

Verbatim does make DVD drives they sell drive manufactured by other companies. So far people have say the Verbatim DVD+RW/R Drive they got was either manufactured by NEC or Ricoh.

This Verbatim DVD+RW/R Drive was on sale for this price three weeks ago and I haven't heard anyone who bought one complain about the Verbatim drive, maybe you would like to provide a link to that review you keep talking about.

I got this verbatim drive for $129 after rebate and I quite frankly love it!

Also, I yet to buy a ps2 and burn but I found some chart on the web that had the compaitiblity of media on the ps2 and it said version 7 was the only one that read +r/rw. I hope not.. maybe I'll sell my drive for a -r/rw =(

Alrighty,

Since I can't find any Cendyne's, and I shouldn't buy one anyway because I have a v7 PS2 and DVD-R's are no good for it....

And since I'm not paying $349.00+tax for a Sony DRU 500A...

I went ahead and purchased the Verbatim DVD+R and some other goodies online.

My order:
$239.99 Verbatim DVD+RW/R (20216641)
$10.00 RCA Platinum Universal Remote Control (20191196)
$7.59 6pk Stackable Letter Trays (08112776)
======
$257.58 Total (but wait....there's more!)

-$40.00 Verbatim Rebate
-$10.00 RCA Remote Rebate
-$50.00 $50 off $250 OfficeMax automatic coupon when you check out (only good online)
-$7.59 For letter trays which were purchased for my Wife ;)
======
$149.99 Total + tax

MysticMan1, when I get some time I'll find those reviews. Meanwhile, I need to figure out a way to make this thing work since it's not supported under PrimoDVD.

well, its supported under nero so why dont you just rent games instead of downloading images? I believe nero should work fine to copy. Thats what my ex-roomate uses

DVD-R's work just fine for V7 PS2's, I have a V7 39001 w/ Messiah 2 Pro and all my DVD-Rs work fine.

I also must note that dvdplusrw.org is owned by the DVD+RW consortium so its a little biased toward +RW, but they do have good information. The labs at my school have the 2.4 Ricoh DVD+RW drives in then and I used the bit set utlility from dvdplusrw.org to make them readable
