DEAD - They say not to spend over 2500 on a PC but...

After listening to the replies that were actually constructive and chatting with a few different people through pms I've decided to go ahead and build the PC on my own and save some cash. Thanks again to those who helped me get to this point and specifically those who advised me on the particular parts to buy.

Well, you get tech support with it, so I'm sure that's a major bonus. I suppose you couldn't build this for much cheaper but it's worth a shot. Looks like a pretty solid system though, and that 320 gig drive won't get filled too quickly.

1. Dell customer support blows the big one. If you have any problems (which do occur frequently), be prepared for a month long struggle with them
2. 3.8 is not justified over 3.6
3. Build it yourself, or at least get it from a dealer that allows more customization (boldata.com gave me a great laptop, and their desktops look good too)
4. $2500 is a lot to spend on a computer

get raptors. asus sli and dual 6800 ultras if you are going to spend that much

dell doesn't really offer any of that and I prefer not to build my own system.

you will be able to tell exactly 0% difference between a 3.6 and a 2.8

also, $2500?!?!?!? Build it yourself and it will be cheaper. Go with AMD and screw DDR2

besides the obvious inflated price, i noticed this...

why do you need 2 dvd writers?
and if you're an AT member...you shouldnt need the 4 yr warranty

Give me a week.

To be honest, I think eMachines have better build quality than the Dimension line. This from a person who has gotten 12v shocks from the back of damn near every emachine he's touched.

one is a 16x dvd-rom and the other is a 16x dvd +/- RW and the 4 yr warranty is only about 70 dollars more than the 1 yr warranty for the deal that i'm getting.

Look at the Compaq gaming machine, you can probably save a bit more money and get an Athlon 64 (Which is better for gaming)

The specs are really nice. You might be able to save a little $ building it yourself as well, but as aplefka stated the customer support perhaps is worth the extra cake, if you need it that is. IMHO building is just too much fun to pass up.

To fill the drive? I could fill it as soon as I got it. I'm in desparate need of space, but it sounds like he doesn't really need this machine. If he doesn't know how to build it then he must not play THAT many games. It's a good system, and it'd be expensive to build, but if he really wants Dell tech support then I guess he can go for it.

You could have Monarch Computers custom build a computer for you. And if you're planning on playing games alot you should get an AMD processor based PC. It is known that AMD destroys Intel for gaming, just check Tom's Hardware and look at the CPU Chart for the benchmarks.

It's not that I don't know how to build this same set up on my own it's just that I hate having to wait for the best deals on every single component I need. And even though their cs blows it's very convenient getting everything pre-built from a reputable company.

Yeah, AMD > Intel at gaming.

However, jumping from an AMD 2100+ to an Intel P4 2.8C, I can't complain yet. I'll upgrade in the next year or two, depending.

Couple minor things I'd suggest:

1) Drop your CPU down a little (3.4 or 3.6) and go to 2 GB. 2 GB of RAM (2 x 1 GB specifically) will put you in far better position a year from now than the extra 200 or 400 MHz.

2) The 16X DL burners provided by Dell are kind of a bastard child, I would drop to the lowest optical drive configuration allowed & purchase good drives on your own (16X
Plextor SATA for example).

3) Get hard drives with NCQ support. I just got an 8400 configured with 2 x 160 GB NCQ (currently running RAID 0).

Overall it's a very nice machine, & well worth the money. I love my 8400 (P4 3.2, 2 GB).
