(Write Speed
veloCD now features Constant Angular Velocity (CAV) burning technology. As a result, the unit records discs faster than other drives, especially when burning less than a full disc.

Plus, thanks to veloCD's buffer underrun protection, you can surf the Web, send email or do virtually anything while your CD burns. In order to write at 48X speed, you must use CD-R media certified to record at that speed.

Rewrite Speed
With 24X rewriting, veloCD sets another speed record. In less time than ever before, you'll complete drag-n-drop and whole-disc backups to CD-RW. In order to record CD-RW discs at 24X speed, you must use CD-RW media certified to record at that speed.

Read Speed
veloCD reads data discs at 48X speed. With impressive performance across the board, veloCD may be the only drive you ever need.

Rip Speed
With 48X rip (digital audio extraction) speed, veloCD transfers an audio track from a CD to your hard drive in 5 seconds.

What's the source of information that this is a Lite-On drive mechanism? There is nothing mentioned about the manufacturer of the drive mechanism in either the CompUSA ad, or in the CDR-Info brief news release.

I thought you posted earlier in the week that only Acer and BenQ were producing 48/16/48 drive mechansims???? (threadid=833013)

Also, the product description lists "Nero Express" as the primary software - any idea whether the "express" is a "lite" (ie. watered-down) version of Nero 5.5 ????

Can you please post the supporting information so everyone can decide whether to return the $39.99 TDK 40/12/48 burner (ie. cut-out the UPC) for this one.

LiteOn ready to ship LTR-48246S (48x/24x/48x) recorder
Wednesday, 26 June 2002

LiteOn keep pushing both recording and re-writing speeds with new models. After the known LTR-48125W, a new recorder arrives shortly and gives a boost in the re-writing speeds up to 24x...
The LTR-48246S supports 48x (CAV) writing, 24x (P-CAV) re-writing, 48x (CAV) reading, SmartBurn, Smart-X and includes 2MB of buffer. The major specifications are the same with the LTR-48125W and the only difference seems to be the increased re-writing speed.

In order to write 24x, you would have to get new HS-RW media based upon different chemicals than the existing one. The new ORANGE BOOK PART III VOL.3 V0.5 descibes such high recording speed (up to 32X).

The new drive is expected to come next month...

I did an internet search and it only brought-up "www.nero.com", *not* "www.ahead.de". Unless I missed a link, there was essentially nothing on Nero's site except the following:

"NeroVision Express
For Video CDs, Super
Video CDs and DVDs
"

The *one* link to Nero Express on their splash page, links to a demo-download for for NeroMix. There's no product description or demo available for Nero Express....

Nero Express is what ahead has renamed the "wizard" for burning cds. Version 5.5.9.0 has this feature included. Basically there's a button in the toolbar that lets you switch between the normal file explorer view and this express view, which walks you through the process. You pick the type of compilation, etc. The same thing they've had for many version without the snazzy new name. The nice thing is though there is now a checkbox to remove silence between tracks on audio cd's ('bout time!). I don't think express is a completely different product, more of a feature of Nero Burning Rom.

I am a confessed and still unreformed upgradaholic...but even I sober up occasionally. Unless you have a "burning" need (Sorry, I couldn't stop myself), why fork over an additional $50 for negligible gain....40X vs 48X CDR. Yeah, CDRW goes from 12x to 24x, but who burns that many CDRW's with CDR so cheap?

If you were fortunate enough to latch onto one of the the 40/12/48, I would be looking for another toy to buy if I had $50 "burning" (uh, I did it again) in my pocket.:D

For those poeple who do a lot of backup the 24x rewrite speed would be a welcome improvement, and burning a 648MB image file (HDD-to-CD-R) in 2:31 mins is kind of nice too. :)

Isn't it cheaper to get the Lite-on 48x CDRW drive thru Dell Home store with free over night shipping. My total came to 74 bucks.

Currently (July 24, 2002) Dell has 10% off all periphals and accessories and there is 5% coupon floating around at your techie bargain site.

The TDK is 24x rewrite (48x24x48), the LiteOn you bought at dell is the older 12x rewrite model.

No coupons at CompUSA and the office stores don't carry the TDK brand CDRW drives.

Why would anyone even use CDRW with CDR media costing about as much as a sheet of paper?

At least we know why they are dumping drives left and right...faster RW speeds.

Anyhow, I wonder if my liteon 40x (upgraded to 48x) will be able to be upgraded to the faster RW speeds via firmware alone.

Any ideas???

This is still NOT dead!

In-store *and* online price as of today - $109.99

$10.00 mail-in rebate STILL good through 08/31/02

Here's directly from the rebate form sitting right in front of me....

"How to get your rebate: 1. Purchase the TDK 48x veloCD between 27 July and August 31, 2002 at CompUSA. 2. Enclose this original, filled out
request form along with the original UPC symbol, original S/N (serial numbers: see examples) from the
bottom of the TDK 48x veloCD package and a copy of your orignal, dated register receipt with the
required prchase circled. Offer expires August 31, 2002, with a final postmark no later than September
30, 2002. This offer is not to be combined with any other offer.
3. Mail to: "TDK $10 VeloCD Rebate Offer, P.O. Box 4309, Young America, MN 55558-4309."

Circuit City also has a $10 rebate listed on their website through 31 August, and the 48x burner is also available now at Best Buy, which should present some pricematching opportunities till the end of the month.... Both Best Buy and Circuit City prices were higher.....
