Somebody ruined it, somebody else is a thief, we all ought to know better, they're gonna screw you, and you'll never get it. I love this place

I think it is possible - members only, no lurkers, as in the access is locked to casual viewers, and a "you bring a deal, you can enter, maybe" requirement. People of like mind would keep their mouths shut and not "spread it around", and once the hard part - building up enough members to make it run smoothly, you would see the advantage of strong deals - the kind that someone discovers, or thinks up on their own - showing up there, and nowhere else.

Last year, when everyone way stampeding for a $249.99 miniDV at one of the office super stores, and comparing to a similar deal at Amazon for $288, I picked up a $1499 list, $1000 street price 1.3 megapixel miniDV that won top camcorder in a European magazine, for $488 before a few Amazon coupons. And I kept my mouth shut, since I knew the result of posting it would have meant me possibly not getting the product, about two dozen ebay postings - which would not have mattered to me, but would have necessitated two dozen orders to Amazon, maybe with "express shipping" - and an endless debate over who got screwed, how dare Amazon not have 2,000 units in stock, and all that.

If there was a private board, I likely would have posted "Heads up - great deal at Amazon, two left, blah blah blah", there would have been some discussion, and maybe a couple of people would post "got one - thanks for the deal", the deal would be done, and we would get down to looking for the next thing.

I'm going to look around to see if my company has some spare room on a server for a board. ;):D

Never before have I been happy to receive nothing! :)

>>>Way to go and screw up the deal. Even if there was a minute possibility, its gone now with jack asses like you ordering ridiculously high quantities of things.

Thank You. Just when I thought the anti-capitalists were dead, you show up to post the cliche. Guess what? The world goes to those who have the nads to get it. You snooze, you lose baby, that's life.

I got a call from spiegel yesterday...telling me it was a pricing mistake and asking if i still wanted to place the order at $219 vs. $2.19 - uh, it was a no-brainer.

Nice of them to call at least.

There ought to be a PRIVATE deal board, where someone can crack a joke without everyone becoming the "Deal Police" when the "deal" in question was invalid anyway.

good idea, but it'll probably leak out of the private board as well.

I think that is a factor of trust - a new member would have to be "invited" and perhaps recommended by an existing member. Poorly behaving people - as in blabbermouths - would get tossed, but otherwise, it would be self-moderating. If everyone more or less "knows" one another, it can work.

Fuuuuuunny - don't quit your day job.:)

It's just an idea - but might just do it. You know how many crap posts someone has to read now to find the "real deal"?

If anyone IS interested, PM me with a yes or no, that's all, I will take that as my guide.

I think the private board idea is just a pipedream. It would take just one member revealing some of the information to someone outside the group and it would spread across the 'net in moments. That's how most of us find out about the deals anayway. A good number of these deals, especially the coupon plus rebate combos, aren't actually advertised anywhere. You're trying to fight the same battle retailers are struggling with, and they are losing badly.

Your plans for a utopia ignore a key component of what makes a hot deals board good: The more people on the board, the more deals you find out about. You guys can open your own private little club, and you may be able to keep out the people asking how to turn their computers on, but you're never going to find out about all the deals that AT-ers will.

Besides, it sounds like your board would not target hot deals but rather price mistakes. Most of the deals offered on AT are indeed "hot deals," and as most retailers are actually in business to actually sell things to consumers, you don't have any trouble making them work. If you want to capitalize on things like "Amazon has Harry Potter listed for FREE!," then by all means, form a club with a secret handshake and talk only in code. But don't kid yourself into thinking you've somehow done some great research into a hot deal. You've just stumbled onto a computer glitch.

Well. once you create this private forum, you could have different levels. So when you first get in you only view your own deal and other new members deals. If you post 100 deals you could move up a level and "view" more deals by more members. So, a senior member would see senior posts, etc. That way only the people that post the most deals would reach the higher levels of visibility and be able to "see" them all.

EDIT: My only question would be: Who's gonna decide what's a good deal or not? What I think is a good deal might not be to you. Somebody is going to have to have a lot of power over all the members of this private forum.

Yes, the more people, the more deals - but have you ever looked at how many people POST deals and how many reply to the deal postings?

It's not to target price mistakes, either. In my case, Amazon put the product on clearance, and I happened to look in the right place at the right time. Many deals are like that. Further, more and more the companies are using targeted promotions for coupon codes - look what happens when someone posts a code at a place like FW - in the next hour, all the other boards have postings with the "deal" and the vendor gets crushed, sometimes so much that they pull the offer.

Same as with when some spots a promotion on a "bargain" site and then remembers, "hey, I know there is a rebate on that, plus I think this store will pricematch" and suddenly, there is a killer deal created.

This is what I want to have in such a "private" board - people can freely SHARE the deals without getting crap thrown back at them, and without his or her deal getting cancelled at the vendor because 1289 ebay'ers showed up looking for a freebie.

If I would do this, I could make a "Dirty Deals" section just for what you're saying - price mistakes, but I'm not interested in that. I just want decorum and a modicum of restraint.

Funny you should mention that, jjsole - I did a search of ARCHIVED posts, and I started 4 deals. You started ONE, called "Not Hot, Amazon to charge shipping" or some nonsense like that. I guess you are out of the club. ;)
