Dead Space the good kind of horror?

Howdy folks,

I had no idea Dead Space came out 5 days ago, and I'll be picking it up later today. For those who have it, what do you guys think so far?

I loved the suspense-type horror from the original Fear, but couldn't stand the silly Doom3 "Pick up that shotgun and 9 monsters spawn right behind you" scares.

Doh. Sorry, I got confused by their website. It came out on the 14th for consoles, but PC won't be out for a few more days.

After a little reading, I'm very concerned about the controls. Dead Space for PC still has the gamepad analog controller code in it, and mouse movements are translated through this code. Input lag and acceleration are a problem. According to reviewers, this makes for a very unintuitive, difficult-to-use interface.

Taken from this thread: http://forums.ea.com/mboards/t...adID=447665&tstart=105

When you move the mouse, usually the view moves instantly in PC games, whether 1st or 3rd person, but in consoles, due to the analog controller, the view initially moves slowly and quickly accelerates as the player pushes the analog stick further to one side. When this is translated to PC, the effect is a delayed reaction on screen from the actual player mouse input, because the mouse is simulating the analog controller"

I am not a happy camper, and actually a little insulted. Is it too much to ask that a major PC game release uses proper mouse/keyboard code?

WhatIfGaming.com comments on the controls:
http://whatifgaming.com/dead-s...ssues-not-fluid-enough

For all our hardcore PC audience, that means everyone of you, we recently got hands on with an early copy of EA?s Dead Space for the PC. Good news? It?s still Dead Space!

Bad news? The controls are 2nd to the worst controls we?ve seen ever since Path of Neo came to the PC platforms. The smoothness compared to consoles is just not there, and from what we can tell it doesn?t seem like a patch can fix most of the issues. Inventory stack access becomes frustrating when fighting with monsters and aiming for on-the-fly changes. The controls just aren?t smooth. When contacting EA Redwood Shores regarding these issues:

"Dead Space for PC is an equivalent experience to that on consoles. The controls are different and customizable, but we feel it?s in the best ability for the players to match what the console experience is like."

It?s ironic that it needs to be argued that it matches the console experience from the controls in EA?s eyes. The fact isn?t a matter of customization as much as it?s just not feasible to do most of the mapped controls on the keyboard and still maintain a fluid transition between interface and gameplay. If you have a console, go with the console version of Dead Space. The PC one is just not the same thing. If you?re tight on $20 extra for the console version, rent it and then settle for the PC one after. It?s such a shame.

doom3 was the only game that made the hair on the back of my neck rise while playing

Dead Space I heard is more of a "thriller", a more thinking type of horror. Not like a "surprise" type horror like doom3

I also read that the PC controls were suppose to be subpar. Looks like I'll be plugging in my X360 controller.

The good news is that it seems the console users are enjoying the game so hopefully that enjoyment follows into the PC version.

They contacted EA and got the following explanation: "Dead Space for PC is an equivalent experience to that on consoles. The controls are different and customizable, but we feel it?s in the best ability for the players to match what the console experience is like."

Strange I thought I was using a pc because I liked the pc experience.
I had no idea I used one to emulate a console.
Damn , I could have saved tons of money !

I agree. I mean I couldn't even stand like Assassins Creed which was supposedly brilliant and a great gaming experience. I got about 2 hrs in and sold it. GOW's controls I could barely stand, but slogged through it because I loved the environments and the genre in general. But games where the controls are just butchered - I have no patience for that.

I think the first Resident Evil was much scarier myself... I remember poppin that baby in and not even knowning what I was getting myself into, that was a scary game. Too bad they ruined the series in my opinion.

damn i was really looking forward to this, but i hate playing games on consoles because it totally fucks my aim up vs using a mouse and keyboard. here's to hoping someone hacks the game engine to make it playable on PC

There are apologists on the EA forums making excuses like "He's in a heavy spacesuit so he can't aim fast or well".

Sigh. Like Modelworks said, I play on a PC because I get a better experience. I like my mouse and keyboard and don't need to pretend it's a damned controller.

Dead space is published by EA, what kind of DRM do they have on this now?

I was debating getting it due to the DRM, but was probably going to get it assuming user reports were good. This changes the game entirely. I'll have to pass.

I agree with that, I don't want to emulate a console experience, I want to play a PC game. However, I do understand that some games are simply ported over from a console so I don't really expect much in the way of controls from them. I couldn't imagine playing Assassin's Creed with the keyboard/mouse so I just use my cheap Logitech Dual Action controller (which is essentially a PS2) controller and everything works just fine.

Ass Creed was crap in the first place, but what was wrong with GOW's controls? It's basically your standard fps fare. I hope you're not bashing for the sake of bashing.

Dead Space is pretty darn scary IMO. The environment alone had me cautiously turning corners for at least the first 5 hours, and every now and then the game still gives me a good jump. Every time I hear "quarantine activated" I think "Oh Sh!8!."

Is there/will there be rumble on the PC version? A lot of console to PC ports don't have rumble. I miss it on my PC.

Well that settles it for me then, I'll get it for my 360 or PS3.

I've decided not to purchase Dead Space until I hear there will be a patch that addresses this.

I play with a mouse/keyboard because it feels more natural. I do NOT need the game to emulate an analog controller because the devs were too lazy to add proper mouse/keyboard support.

I bought this for ps3 cause I didn't want to wait for the PC version. It's a really fun game, basically Resident Evil style game play, which imo works better with a controller anyway.

I agree with you about the controls. I played it on an Xbox 360, and the controls are pretty well implemented. I own a wired Xbox 360 controller for my PC, and I highly recommend it for console ports, like Assassin's Creed. It's a high quality controller, it works out of the box with Windows, and it's only $40.

As far as game play goes, Dead Space really impressed me for the first few hours, and then it started to get a little stale. I returned my Xbox 360 (nothing related to the game), sold the game, and I have no intentions whatsoever of picking it up for PC.
