I recently purchased and downloaded Dead Space to play on my PC from Direct2Drive. The keyboard controls are frustrating because sometimes they don't work. After the Farcry2 disaster I am getting angry at wasting money on games that suck or don't play as promised. I have tried looking at EA forums but apparently many people are having the same problems.

Why even release the game?
Why doesn't EA address their customers concerns?
Aren't retail laws being broken?
How come you can't get a refund on a PC game?
Is the gaming industry going through bad economic times?
When I'm playing a game I get fully immersed in it where I forget work. It's one of many ways I relieve stress. But playing games is just not near as fun as it used to be. Again: What the hell is going on?

EA is a bad company, dont buy from them. I gather dead space was designed with a console in mind, on the xbox its ok, not halo 1 good but its better than the usual trash EA turns out.

Dosent surprise me the PC version sucks though.

no idea what you're talking about. The game runs well considering it's a port. Some clunkiness in the menu system but use the arrow keys for that and it works fine. Slight mouse sluggishness but that could be simply to enhance tension levels :)
I'm enjoying the game, it's stylish and atmospheric, voice acting is good, plot and action are well paced and well thought out and it doesn't feel too heavily scripted.
It's what Doom 3 should have been.

caveat: i'm only in chapter 2

turn off vsync.

or plug in a 360 controller which every pc gamer should have anyway. if you spend $200+ on a graphics card, shell out $30 so you can enjoy games that control better with a gamepad.

i started the game with the gamepad and after getting mauled over and over in the asteroids section, switched to m/kb and found i preferred it, and stuck with that the rest of the game.

i had no problems either way and thought it was a great game. props to EA for experimenting with new franchises. between this and mirror's edge they're branching out successfully. drm has never affected me negatively as I don't reinstall windows every week. like 99% of people out there, I'm quite happy with my pc gaming and have no plans to buy a console.

Well the excuse is that they are afraid you copied it, the real reason is because most stores return policy are longer then the duration of a game. It is the reason that a game only has to look good and not actually be good.

Yes, the whole world is.

I had no idea you can hook up a 360 controller to a PC, I will give it a try. Thanks.

Wow, such a mature and helpful post....*rolls eyes*

But on topic, as others have said, try a 360 controller.
If you don't have one, you can always find an original xbox controller on the cheap.
XBCD should be rather useful in that case

You are the one that asked the questions. Those are the answers.
The goal of EA is the same as all other companies, to make money. That is why they put out any game. Currently there is a disconnect between quality and profit in the video game industry, so they put out games that don't work right, and don't care that everyone complains. The ones complaining have already bought their game and will almost certainly buy the next one. All that really seems to effect the sales of video games is advertising budget so they can to do things like pay off or bully the review sites.
I've been playing video games since I got my first Pong game in the 70's, and I can say with certainty that the games are much better at immersion then any other time in history, therefore it must be you that changed.

The games Fallout 3, COD World At War, and Left 4 Dead all play really well on the PC. Perhaps you should just get better games.

Dead Space played without a hitch for me on the PC - best game I've played in awhile. Sounds like a PEBKAC.

Mass Effect also plays very well on the PC, and thanks to Teh Eevil DRM you don't even need the DVD in the drive to play.

Get a xbox controller? Or maybe he should try eating a bag of broken glass while he games too. Why and the hell would anyone play a FPS on the PC with a xbox controller?

Turn off vsync ingame menu. Turn vsync on GPU control panel. Control lag is gone once you do this.

Ahh ... I haven't tried it, but I try to avaid EA titles unless I'm really bored or really psyched about a game ...

Everything SMOGZINN said looks accurate to me, and it doesn't appear like he was insulting or condescending at all in the way he said it.

SMOGZINN: ricleo2 was the person who asked the questions, not nismotigerwvu. I can see how you would mistake the two though, since they have the same avatar.

1) Dead Space is not an FPS
2) Dead Space seems to be designed with a gamepad in mind.
3) People have preferred methods of playing their video games. Why the hell do you have to be suck a dick about it?
4) What is "why and the hell"?

The issue with Dead Space is not that it plays better on a controller... it's that NO EFFORT was made to accomodate PC users. Remapping keys is a nightmare, you NEED to turn off V-Sync to increase mouse sensitivity (and also max out the sensitivity slider ingame), and worst of all - mouse + kb input is run through analog controller code... it's just emulating a goddamned controller.

When I play a game on PC, I expect it to work well with a mouse and keyboard.

Good game, but very, very shoddy port by incredibly lazy or apathetic developers.

It's a rushed console port. It's purpose for release on the PC is to pad the sales of the game a bit. They publisher (EA) weights the cost of porting it against projected sales profits and if sales outweigh the cost of development they do it. The developer is then given a certain budget to port it. If the budget isn't enough to cover the cost of actually making things like the controls work properly then the publisher will either put more money into it or just release it. When this scenario comes up with EA games they usually just release it.

It's all too common nowadays, and is one of the reasons I bought a X-360. Most AAA titles are developed for the console while the PC is more of an afterthought. For FPS games I use an XIM to allow me to use my PC setup, since I prefer a mouse and keyboard for those types of games. http://xim360.com/

It's quite sad actually.. I've been gaming on the PC since the early 90's, and now i'm almost forced to game on consoles if I want to play big budget titles that aren't broken.

Thing is, big budget game doesn't = good game :)

and Liet, i always turn off vsync. Only reason to turn it on is if you have tearing

PC Games have typically required more thought to set up and/or to play, maybe all the time, but imo that's not a bad thing. Unless you're always high or something...haha
Just kidding, but really, both platforms, console and PC, have a place in the entertainment world.

I think from now on I will not buy a game when it first comes out. I will have to wait, then spend time researching forums and game review sites. Kind of a shame, but game developers are really going to have to earn my money now.
Sure thankful for the helpful comments. Not so helpful comments: thanks for the laughs.

Well excuse me but fuck the hell off. I play on PC so I can use my mouse and keyboard. It's probably the number 1 draw card for PC gaming to me.

That's true. I'm only referring to the big budget ones, some of which are decent enough for me to want to buy. There are many many good lower budget games out there, yes. I absolutely love the Alien Shooter games, which are definitely lower budget but rival many of the AAA ones IMO.

What I was getting at is it's getting harder to justify owning a gaming PC with a dual core processor, the latest graphics card, etc.. when most the games that take any advantage of that technology are shitty console ports that aren't done right. One exception i've seen recently is Fallout 3. What an awesome game. You can tell it was developed with the PC in mind. Maybe besides the fact that it's constantly crashing.. lol
