I just started playing this game last night and cant figure out why in the hell this game got such good reviews? I loved the original Dead Space but the way Extraction is done is more irritation than enjoyment. I guess I didnt realize what rail shooter meant because I thought I would still be able to control where I walk and look. this is more of an interactive movie than a game as you have no option to do anything really. you are just forced along and basically told to push this or that which is is ridiculous.

also what the hell is up with the auto save feature? I have to complete a freaking chapter to have a save spot? some of us may not have the convenience of being able to finish a chapter at a time. yes they are not too long but what if I finish a chapter and then get 15-20 minutes into the next one and I have to stop or get killed?? repeating 15-20 minutes of a game several times over doesnt sound like fun to me.

what i want to know is how the game is getting 8's and 9's in reviews. making it a rail shooter completely defeats the purpose of both 'survival' and 'horror.' and it also removes any excuse for it looking like ass, since most everything can be pre-rendered. i guess this is also a survival horror game.

yeah I agree that it can hardly be a rail shooter and horror survival game at the same time. this is literally the first rail shooter I have ever played and will be my last. btw the graphics are VERY good especially for a Wii.

This below is the most known survival horror on rails game series:

If i remember, there where survival horror on rails games on 3DO and even on SEGA CD.

I didn't like any of them.

I love house of the dead, however I think classifying it as survival horror is kind of unqualified, as the mechanics are no different than Time Crisis.

Actually, House of the Dead has less game mechanics (and less of the bullshit) than Time Crisis as HOTD doesn't have a shield you can puss behind.

I said survival horror on rails type.

Sure, if you thinking resident evil/Silent Hill type games only, this should be light gun shooter type with horror elements.

Many sites categorize this series as Survival Horror on rails shooter (including the Wikipage link that i gave), example:

http://www.gametrailers.com/ga...e-of-the-dead-2-3/5788

And many sites don't.

But it doesn't matter the label, the gameplay is Time Crisis type the theme is Survival horror.

I wasn't trying to disagree with you specifically - I know House of the Dead and such are officially categorized as Survival Horror. However, I don't really agree, as for me that point of survival horror is that you are supposed to be scared and tensely fighting to survive. House of the Dead doesn't have either of these things.

I don't agree with labeling every game that has zombies/demons/ghosts in it survival horror. It plants vs. zombies survival horror? Or Diablo/Diablo2? Or Monkey Island?

From the wiki page on survival horror,

These games make the player vulnerable by providing them with less ammunition and fewer heavy weapons than other action games. Although combat is a part of the gameplay, the player must ration ammunition by evading enemies and avoiding direct confrontation.

That does not mesh with the light gun/rail shooter genre, therefore I can't see House of the Dead (or Dead Space: Extraction probably) as survival horror. I think it takes certain gameplay elements to qualify. You can't just take Duck Hunt and replace the ducks with bat zombies and call is survival horror.

if it wasnt purely on rails it would be a nice game. controls work good and the graphics are really good especially for the Wii.

No, i agree with your point of view in general.
I was just trying to explain, why i used this label (since half the sites are using it...)

the high ratings seem to have been based on the story itself. not sure if that's really worth $50, though. I still have yet to really start playing deadspace... i really enjoyed it for the first hour or so but I got so busy and just never picked it up again. I should do that this week.

This game is great. The OP has never even played a on-rails game, so expecting a game like the original deadspace and getting an on-rails deadspace is a good excuse for hating it. But you can't hate the game because of your own ignorance. Thats like buying a zelda rpg and expecting it to be like a normal action/adventure zelda. I don't like the saving feature either, but thats just how arcade light gun games are, otherwise it would be easy to pass. The graphics and sound are great and the story is pretty good considering I finished the first deadspace on 360.
