Dead Space/Controller question

Hi, I'm intrigued by Dead Space and may buy it this weekend. However, most of the criticism seems to be related the controls. Reportedly Mouse/Keyboard doesn't work so well and many players have used controllers.

My question, is it true standard Xbox controllers work on PC's assuming they plug in via USB port? If so, does it have to be Xbox or Xbox 360 controllers? I don't have an Xbox, so I know nothing about their particulars.

TIA

The original xbox didn't have USB controllers, but the 360 does and it works with windows right off the bat. Get one of those.

I play all my games with the 360 controller and I like it. It has support right out of the box, and has enough buttons for most games.
I did have to use the mouse for the cannon shooting portions because the controller wasn't precise or fast enough, but the rest opf the game is great with a controller!
I'm almost done with it and still almost pee my pants.

I have been playing this for a week now with a 360 controller on my pc....normally I am a mouse & keyboard guy but the 360 controller works great with 3rd person games IMO...the only time that the mouse and keyboard were beneficial is for the parts of the game where you must man the ships large guns.....with the 360 controller I was killed a couple of times....switching to the K&M I was able to breeze through it and not take more that 20% damage.

Make sure you get a wired Xbox 360 controller, or the one with the wireless reciever. Using a play and charge kit to connect a wireless controller to the PC isn't going to do anything but charge it.

Dead Space was really designed with the controller in mind. It 100% fully recognizes the 360 pad and uses it by default. The mouse controls can be made less "gamepad-ey" by turning off vsync, but if you have an ATI card, you can't force it in the control panel. You can only force vsync with nVidia cards, for some reason.

I have no problem with the mouse and keyboard controls and have been enjoying the hell out of the game, but maybe thats just me.

max sensitivity + vsync off makes the mouse feel a lot better. I think the KB/M controls are quite adequate, the mouse is a little slow and inaccurate at times but that only adds to the tension 🙂

Call me crazy but I tried to play the game with my 360 controller and ended returning to the KB/M setup, I just liked it better.

However if you are going to play with a controller the 360 pad is the way to go, it's not only recognized out of the box but the in-game prompts and tutorial messages actually change to reflect the 360 mappings.

Mouse/keyboard here, zero problems. OK, one. If my Saitek joystick is plugged in one of two things will happen:

My character will spin in circles, or it will crash on loading. I just need to unplug the joystick and it works fine.
