Dead Space 2 too loud on some parts

So I recently bought dead space 2 and into the game about 10 minutes and this pipe or sprinkler pops and it was way louder than anything so far in the game. I cant seem to get the volume where i can hear everything normal for proper immersion yet low enough for the "jump" sounds not to give me hearing damage. Any thoughts? i know this is part of a scare tactic, but this imo is a cheap way to startle people. I never had sound problems with dead space 1.
