Anyone have experience with repairing a Sony Vaio?

I know Sony will rob me blind to repair the unit so I thought I would post here first.

I have a Sony Vaio FX340 900Mhz. The other day it just stopped booting. I power on and the fan turns on, then a quick 2 sec cd light comes on and there it stands.

What have I checked?

1) Power supply is good, tried with battery in and out.
2) Pushed tiny reset button underneath, Sony splash screen did come up but only half way. Never was able to repeat.
3) Took out battery.
4) Removed harddrive, cdr, keyboard, mouse, all seperately and seperately tried rebooting, no luck.
5) Removed ram, replaced, switched etc, no luck.
6) Took fan assembly from cpu. Funny thing, fan stayed on if not placed on cpu but when secured shuts off 10 seconds later.

I have not ventured to the underbelly of the beast yet.

If anyone can push me in the right direction I would very much appreciate it.

Thank you

PS. (Is there a simple way to check if the cpu is dead?)
PS. (Damm, if I'm asking that, I might as well ask if I can put a faster chip in also! The CPU is socketed not soldered and can be removed.)
