Thanks.

Apparently Seagate may have made some headway in resolving the freezing problems these drives have been having with a firmware upgrade. However, according to the article there may be read performance issues that the new firmware introduces.

That said, the price sure has dipped. Almost seems worth legging it out with Seagate as I would be using it as an external drive. It does come with a five year warranty, after all.

Any thoughts?

These can be picked up at TigerDirect.com for $119.99 + $1.99 shipping - 15% MS Livecash = $103.98 shipped after cashback. 🙂

Does the MS Livecash come off at check out? It did not come off my total, but when I was redirected by MS, a message flashed saying the discount might not be deducted by TD, that MS would send me an email.

Go to Live.com, search for

digitalcameras

Look for the 15% TigerDirect cashback link.

If it isn't there, refresh. Once found, go through link.

(Must have a MS Livecash account). You'll get the money back in about 60 days.

OK, thanks, that is what I did. It just was not clear to me that the discount would not appear in my cart, that I would be waiting for a check.

If you did everything correct, you should see the money "pending" in your Livecash account in about an hour or so. Also, you can get the money via check, PayPal or directly to your bank account/routing number.

Great. Thanks Engineer. Nothing in there yet, lets see if the discount shows up later.

THAT put me over the top 🙂. The $18 showed up instantly in my Live account....well pending at least.

Wow, nothing in my Live account yet. It sure seems like I did everything correctly. It said somewhere on Live that it could take a while for refunds to show up, that it is up to the seller to initiate the process by informing MS that the purchase has been made. hmm?

Would this be a good drive to make into an external drive? Or is the firmware thing enough to make me look elsewhere?

For whatever it is worth, according to the the Seagate product page the "Best-Fit Applications" for the drive are the following:

* Gamer PCs
* High-end PCs
* Mainstream PCs
* Workstations
* Desktop RAID
* USB/FireWire/eSATA personal external storage

I had already gotten 2 from Newegg before finding the deal that Engineer mentioned (thanks, Engineer!). I bought 4 more from TigerDirect, effectively $103.98 each shipped after cashback.

One thing to note:

When signing up for MS Live Cashback, I saw nothing indicating that I needed to go back to my email to finish activating (it's an MS Live Hotmail acct, why should I have to verify it with MS?). Maybe I missed the notification that it would need to be activated. I freaked when I completed my TigerDirect order and logged into my email to find a message indicating that my Live Cashback acct was not yet active. After clicking the activation link in the email, it showed nothing earned or pending.

Eventually, another message from MS Live Cashback appeared indicating that the TigerDirect purchase credited me $18 per drive!

Advice:
If you're in the same situation, ACTIVATE THE MS LIVE CASHBACK ACCT ASAP! There was a small delay before TigerDirect reported the transaction to MS Live, so it gave me just enough time to activate the MS Live Cashback account.

unfortunately for me - TD has a CompUSA outlet no more than 5 miles from my house. Unfortunate because that means they charge me 8% tax 🙁

So I'll go with the Newegg deal, free shipping and a stellar reputation. Also, at this price, this is a great backup drive.

thanks for the clarification Dew and Ich... I will be patient, as I now know that I did everything correctly even though there remains NADA in my Live account.

Is this your first Live.com cash-back? My first took two days to show up...

Uh huh yep, sure is my first time... So that explains it, MS likes to abuse the newcomer. Why somehow does that not strike me as all that much of a surprise? 😛

and, yes, the drama continues this morning as I cannot even get to the Cashback server now, it must be getting hammered, as it is frozen solid...

Good luck everyone. I bought the 1TB version a few weeks ago at about that price. With all the problems with the 1.5TB units right now, I dont think I'd have the balls to do it.
