Dead Rising 2: Off the Record

I read somewhere (think it was a forum post) that DR2:OtR is the best Dead Rising yet. Considering it by itself, I agree, but it recycles DR2. It has one new area, Uranus Zone, a few new side missions, and new combo weapons, including the Laser Gun from Case West, the XBLA co-op game. There are some unlockables like
the Protoman outfit
to go with the
the Mega Man outfit and Real Mega Buster
from DR.

Key refinements:
  • Sandbox mode. No time limit, various challenges, Prestige Points (XP) and cash shared with Case mode. I haven't played it much, but it seems that if the player has difficulty with a specific case, he can switch to the sandbox to do some leveling, then switch back.
  • Automatic checkpoints when transitioning between areas and before most Psycho fights
  • Manual waypoint

Sounds good. My issue with the other DR games was the time limits always imposed on you which hampered the fun a great deal. Sandbox mode with xp that carries over is how it should have been in the first place. May actually buy this one now.

If it's available for a decent price at Amazon on BF, I might buy it. I had quite a lot of fun with the first Dead Rising, but never really found the motivation to buy the second one. The promise of a true sandbox mode, even if flawed, is compelling in light of that.

I never tried the second one because (yes, I'm a wuss) I found the first game too hard to be fun, largely because of the time limits.
Due to the changes, OtR is also the easiest full-length DR yet. I switched extra health items for magazines (PP bonus while in inventory), since I can reload from checkpoint if I have trouble with a Psycho.

By the way, the Gold Deal of the Week is DR: 50% off Case Zero and Case West. As XBLA games, they're shorter, and their difficulties are more even due to level ranges. CZ is capped at level 5, with appropriate challenges, while CW starts at 40 out of 50. The full games start at 0 out of 50.
