Dead RAM slot.

I recently bought another 1 GB 2X512's of ram installing an filling up all the slots I soon experienced windows errors in game freeze ups and all and all buggy behavior. After removing the Ram in the last slot all ran fine. I rotated all the ram and found that no matter what ram went into that 4th slot I would experience problems soon after. And no matter what ram I used all ran fine when only 3 slots where used my feeling Dead 4th ram slot would these symptoms be synonymous with a dead ram slot?

Can you spot any physical damage in the 4th slot such as bent pins? Have you checked the mobo website for any bios updates that may correct the problem. You isolated your own problem so after this would be RMA if possible. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

I haven't looked close for bent pins o btw the 2GB did register in my system properties. I will check out EVGA's site.

I took a quick look at evga's site, there were 2 bios releases since the "original" bios release. None noted anything about a memory slot fix. I'd still try the bios update before the RMA.

Cool thanks tweekah now i have to learn how to safely flash my bio's =)

O yes for got to mention the last time i was playing with that 4th slot had a windows error followed by freeze up and 1 long BEEP

Did you try 2 or 3 sticks of ram with one of the modules in the 4th slot. By this I mean try one of the sticks in the 4th slot but don't leave one or two of the other slots empty. Maybe its not a problem with the 4th slot, maybe it is because on that A64 setup you can't run ram at 1T command rate with all 4 slots in use. Try to set it to 2T command rate.

Are you sure all your modules play nice together? It's not uncommon to have "issues" like you describe when the modules don't "like" each other.

sorry for a noobish questions but how do you change the command rate? and what should i do to make sure my modules are the same?

Ok i found it, its set on 2T

let us know what 2T does for you. Keep in mind that 2T is slower than 1T but due to a know problem with A64 sometimes you must change to 2T if you use all ram slots.

2T is significantly slower on AMD. In most cases, you're better off with less ram and 1T then more ram and 2T.
