I went into gamestop today and traded in my ps2. He asked if it worked and I said yes as it does work. He then wrapped it up and as he began to give me the store credit I asked aren't you going to check it? He says no, we ship all ps2's out for repair anyway before we sell them. I said you give 70 for a dead ps2? He said yes. So there you have it. I live in Cooper City and this was at the Pembroke Lakes Mall in South Florida.

I just called one in my area. You get 80 in store credit, or 64 cash, or 30 if the PS2 doesn't work. Definetely a YMMV.

If you just tell em it works...doubt they'll be able to track it back to you.

When I went to trade in my old PS2 at my local gamestop a while back, the manager hooked it up and tested it, the power cord and the controller with a couple games. She also checked it out all over to make sure that all the seals were intact and that it hadn't been modded. A real pain in the ass too. I ended up just leaving with mine because the manager was such a prick about it.

One thing to remember though, PS2's, Xboxes and GC's all have serial numbers on them and they will write them down and be able to `track it back to you' if they want to. Hell, I've heard of some stores (don't remember if it was EB ot GS) even fingerprinting you when you traded in games, but at the very least they take down your DL number.

There may be laws in your state or local jurisdiction regarding resale of used goods, designed to prevent the "fencing" of stolen property. I can't imagine having to be fingerprinted just to trade in games though, that strikes me as a bit severe.

Here's the news story from gamespot about finger(er just Thumb?)printing people.

(yes, I agree that it's pretty severe. it sounds like the stores were being a little over-zealous in their interpretation of some laws originally aimed at pawn shops.)

Well, the fingerprinting/tracking thing rules out buying a dusty (or stolen??) ps2 at a garage-sale to resell to gamestop.

Usually retailers don't offer enough for used stuff. I was in gamestop a couple years ago when a customer
wanted to sell a dreamcast and a duffle-bag full of controllers and a couple games. After testing it, the
manager offered him $17. The customer declined and packed his stuff up.... so I followed him out and
offered him $30 -- and I ended up with a bag full of dreamcast stuff for $30!

So there's a little tip for ya if you want a cheap used system. Lurk around at gamestop until someone
brings in a system you want, and then out-bid the retailer when the customer is all disappointed.

I thought I was the only one who did stuff like that... I have been in pawn shops before, heard the owner lowball a seller, and then bought the stuff at a steal :^)

Back to the original deal, definitely risky and a big YMMV.

This is legal! Just make sure you make the transaction and any negociations outside the store! :)

YMMV = Your Mileage May Vary

Basically, it means there is no guarantee that it will work at your local store, and you may spend most of the day driving from store to store in order to get the best deal.
