Dead Power Supplies

Alright here is the story: Earlier this summer in July I had a power supply die on me for the first time ever. I just assumed it was the power supply dying of old age since it's around 4 years old. I got a backup from a friend of mine, and haven't bothered to buy a new replacement. The backup was probably the same age as my previous one, but I'm not too sure. It just died on me today while I was playing some TF2. My computer just shut off all of a sudden, and I'm unable to turn it on. Everything else that is attached to my UPS works just fine. I switched power cables, and that made no difference. The motherboard is still getting power though because the onboard networking lights go on when it's plugged in. I was wondering if you guys might have any ideas I could look into to see if it's something my system is causing (I'm not sure if it is or not since about 5 months have passed between incidents) or any suggestions to try and get the power supply working again. I'd rather find out if there is a problem instead of just going and buying a new power supply and having it happen again.

System Specs:
P4 3.0Ghz Prescott
2GB DDR PC3200
Abit IC7-Max3 Motherboard
ATI Radeon X850 Pro
Seagate SATA 500Gb HD (7200.11 Series I think)
PS: Antec TruPower 450W (First one that died) Antec TruPower 400W (One that just recently died)

This is my main system since I haven't been able to upgrade in a few years, so not being able to use it is a big loss for me.

Truepower I believe is under a recall....

You will have to call Antec Monday A.M. and see what they will do for you.

I don't remember any Antec recalls, but their original TruePower series were notorious for having capacitor failures. ALL capacitors will age and deteriorate to the point of not working at anywhere near spec, but the particular ones that Antec used in those units were branded Fuhjyyu which became notorious (though nobody knew it at the time) for failing much sooner than any capacitor has a right to. It was also the same brand of capacitors that were known for leaking on motherboards way back then.

Urban Dictionary has a funny listing for this brand.

(1) Chinese word for feces.

(2) Brand name of abysmal quality capacitors

Whoever wrote that must have had several failed computer parts due to that brand capacitor.

i had 3 antecs go up in smoke on me in one summer, all 550 watts. i used to really like antec but they got cheap i guess. i run pc power and cooling now.
