(DEAD)
Update Fry's (in Wed. L.A. Times) has the Pacific Digital 8x DVD±R/RW drive for $49.99 (No! rebate) (ends Thu. 10--28), take the ad to a Officemax store and have they PM the Fry's price.
The deal: OM's price $79.99 - $33 PM (110%) = $46.99 - $50 MIR = FREE + $3 back in pocket.
Of course "all" PM are YMMV.

Now that this is advertised at $79.99 and we paid $89.99 last week (ofcourse we used some coupons and stuff) what are the possibilities of doing a PM and getting back $10. Any suggestions is appreciated

I got one of these burners during last deal and strongly advice against keeping it if you get the BTC rebadge version. It was a horrible burner where you would cross your finger when you pushed burn and it would not do multisession on any of the DVD+rw disks I had.

Edit- It was bad enough for me to setup a new email account to be able to post and warn people against it.

Officemax's Low Price Guarantee: If you find a lower price at any office product superstore on a new identical item, just show us the lower price when you buy the item at OfficeMax or within 14 days after your OfficeMax purchase, we'll refund the difference.

Poeple have been using the Visa coupon in-store for the past 4 months, so you either found the wrong coupon or you didn't look at the bottom part of the coupon.

Is this deal valid right now? The price online is $140, is the price in store $80?

I got one of those btc drives, it worked great for a while then I started getting bad burns, slow burns, and flat out stalled burns. I just did a firmware upgrade and everything is working great now.

Btw, look at their in-store ads (posted online). Memorex 50-pack DVD media - $25 OTD, and 25-pack DVD media - $10 OTD. Good deal!
(Not sure what format, ad picture was too small to see on product label.)

God I hate the office max near my place in austin, tx. They never have the pacific digital harddrives nor the mad dog....always out of stock...so I only had the choice between MicroAdvantage and Khypermedia. The Khypermedia are always Made in China. I finally bought the Khypermedia one. Not sure, I might return it.

I was going to do this one, but I just discovered something. The two rebates on the Officemax website are expired. They both are expired from 10/16/04 in the continental US. If you buy the DVD drive right now, you get a $50 rebate that prints out at the register. It is different than the two on the website and is good from 10/24/04. So I think you will only be able to get one $50 rebate. The other two were probably still on there because of Hawaii and Alaska were good through 10/23/04 and Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands were good through 10/30/04. If you live in the continental US, I'm sure they are going to reject this.

Lots of people who own the 8x BTC drive have say it works OK for them, have you updated the firmware? or check to see if it's installed right?
You can find firmware and help at the BTC forum at cdfreaks.com LINK

I just bought the Pacific Digital, and based on the serial number, it is a LiteOn LDW-811S. Everything I read about this drive says it is a 8x+R and 4x-R, despite the original poster's contention that it is 8x+/-R. Can anyone confirm if it is indeed 8x+/-R? If not, maybe the Mad Dog drive is a better buy. It supposed to be a NEC ND-2500A, which is 8x+/-R.

Thanks

You must have read it wrong.

And yes, the Mad dog drive is a rebadged NEC ND-2500A drive

since my local OMax's only have the Khypermedia, i tried to get a Mad Dog on the phone. CSR told me they are CBO, so if you find a Mad Dog at your store, lucky you.

yeah i updated the firmware the minute i installed it. I also checked the cdfreak forum when i first had problems and didnt find any info that helped. For me being able to multisession on a dvdrw is very important and this drive would simply not do it on any of the dvdrw disk i own. I just want people to know for the price of this drive you might as well spend another few bucks on a better drive or try to exchange for the liteon rebadge.

Thanks for your reply, MysticMan1. In your reply, for Pacific Digital, you state "all other numbers are LiteOn drives". This means I have a LiteOn drive. Both the 851S and the 811S are 8x+R and 4x-R drives, NOT 8x+R and 8x-R. All I am asking is should I keep this drive for $29 or is the Mad Dog drive a better buy, assuming it is even available?

Thanks again for your help.

Regarding the ability to upgrade liteon to dual layer:

I have spent about an hour (OK, not exhaustive, but all my ADD mind can take right now) looking around and have only found upgrades for dual layer READING. Can anyone help out with information on upgrading a liteon 811s to dual layer BURNING? At this point I will even be satisfied with a negation of the possibility so I can direct my efforts toward a NEC 2500A.

Thanks

OH, and I did upgrade the firmware to HSOR, but DVDinfoPro says no to DL.

Unforturnately, the Lite-On 811S CANNOT be upgraded to Dual Layer. It has a different hardware than the later series. The Lite-Ons that CAN be upgraded to Dual Layer is 451S, 851S, and 812S. These three have pretty much identical hardware, except the 812S can do 8x -R, while the former two can only do 4x -R. All three can be flashed with the 832S for dual layer support.

Linky

The other Lite-On that can be flashed to dual layer is the 1213S, but that one isn't for sale at OfficeMax.

Also Pacific Digital uses many drives so even if the serial number starts with a "4" and is all numbers, it's a gamble to whether you'll get a 811, 851, or 812.

If you really need dual layer, you're best bet is to try to find a NEC 2500A. Pacific Digital also used NEC drives and the serial should be "4" and a number and a letter", like 41S2736482 etc... Or get a Mad dog 8x drive because that's for sure a NEC.

But there's not much use for dual layer right now cause media is prohibitively expensive, and 4x and now 8x DL standards are coming out.

8x DL news

You should try to get a burner that burns single layer well, and in the future faster/better burners will be available and probably be as cheap as now.

I don't think it can. You might be confusing the BTC with the BenQ.

The drives than can be flashed to dual layers that are on sale are:

* NEC 2500A
* Lite-On 851 or 812
* BenQ DW800A

Both NEC and Lite-on should have mature firewares for DL writing, but the BenQ DL writing quality is questionable right now. Maybe future firmwares will improve.
