I want to get in on this but I'm worried that I'll get the 7200.9 -- anyone else get one yet that was a .10? What was the supposed problems with the .9's?

The 'add to cart' button still works, so technically yes. You're just rolling the dice on whether they'll get new stock and honor the price or cut the order on you.

Got mine, its a 7200.10 !
Remember to remove the jumper to enable SATA 3g operation (see label for jumper settings and location)
If your mobo/controller supports SATA 3g of course.

Interestingly, the outside box has the model number for a 7200.9, but the inside drive itself has a label of a 7200.10 model

My guess is, seagate has had really good yields on the new perpendicular platters, and/or they were able to cut manufacturing costs by perhaps reducing the # of parts needed inside the drive, so they are throwing perp drives into a retail boxes for the other lines, since there's still demand for them.
So everyone goes home happy, seagate for saving money, and us for getting the next gen hdds for the previous gen price.

Nothing. Just that the .10 is the new perpendicular recording, the .9 are the older style.

Logically it would seem so looking at the semantics of the words in question.

If the drive gets shipped, then the answer is yes. If it gets canceled, then no.

Heh, opened one of mine and it's a 7200.10 also. Second one is probably the same... not gonna bother opening it. Has anyone NOT gotten a 7200.10?

Mine was backordered yesterday. Today it shipped. Good deal, especially if the rebate comes through and it is a newer 7200.10 drive.

Mine got cancelled, and price now Listed at $209,99, reg at 189.99 what a great deal.

I ordered on Wednesday and it was backordered yesterday. Can I get my order reactivated or get it at the original 109.99 price by calling is is the deal done for me?

Also, is there any inherent advantage/disadvantage with perpendicular recording with the same size drive? Does the higher density with less parts make it more reliable or is there to little data?

Thanks

Call them and see.
Seagate offers same 5 year warranty on perp drives as normal. But 5 years haven't passed yet, so no one can really tell. So far it looks fine though, no abnormal rush of bad drive reports.
Higher density platters always means more speed (because more data can pass under read/write heads as the platter rotates), so they are better in that sense.

My general bad luck... mine was a 7200.9

ETA: I should add that I got this at B&M Frys for $99.99 and no tax... got it this week at the Wilsonville, OR store...

DOH, sorry to hear that, Buck_Naked. Still, you got a great deal. Drives should be about the same except the .10 will have a bit higher STR.
