$650 + tax after $400 in mail-in rebates

good deal considering you don't have to go there on Friday

note: the $300 rebate has a postmark deadline of 12/12/02, and CompUSA estimates shipping in 7-10 days, so it looks like you only have a couple days to send it in

It's also got an S-video output.

This laptop seems to me a much better deal than the bargain laptops currently being offered through Staples and BestBuy.

Yes, it's a $300 rebate to New Rochelle. I've dealt with them before, and know that they're a bunch of bozos, but I've always gotten my money back.

Anyone care to comment on this particular laptop deal? My total would be $700. That's after tax and shipping (and rebates).

It certainly has better specs (except for CPU) than the Dell Inspiron 2650 I ordered this morning, and cheaper too. I was going to order this and cancel the Dell on Friday, unfortunately the CUSA system rejected my order because Dell already put an authorization charge on my CC and I went over the limit :(

I dont know why but I just made an impulse buy. I had a compaq 2800 that was stolen a few weeks ago so i was looking at that sotec one at office depot since it fits my needs better. But this is so dirt cheap that i couldnt refuse. Anybody already an owner and want to give a review?

$300 rebate.
New Rochelle.
CompUSA.

No thanks. I think I would have a higher chance of fighting the 400+ people that will be outside BestBuy on Friday morning for a cheap deal before it is sold out in the first 3mins. Good deal if it comes through. Very Big IF.

Well there was a review here on Anandtech for the Presario 900. The specs are a little different but it is basically the same machine.

Compaq Presario 900 1500+: The Radeon IGP Goes Mobile

I grabbed one at about 12:01 CT. Unfortunately, I jumped the gun too quickly and the $50 instant rebate wasn't in the system yet so I bought for $699 AR +tax. After the flurry of clicking and credit card charging I noticed that it was $50 more than it should have been so I went back to look at the product's page and the price was just changed. Now I have to deal with CompUSA CSR's to get that extra 50 off. That's what I get for jumping on this deal too fast. My bad.

Anyway, looks like a pretty decent notebook.

I have the 900z that everyone was jumping on a month ago. I think my processor's faster, but other than that, it's the same thing. I'm really happy with it ... dual booting XP pro and Slackware Linux (if anyone's so inclined). Hot deal!

Let's try this one again ... I have this laptop and have noticed the following about the unit. The back cover ( it covers the additional I/O's) is destined to be destroyed. I believe even Compaq knows that it isn't going to last, and the reason I say this is the fact that two screws hold in on and is end user available for replacement. The DvD rom seems to work well and I have even played DivX movies on it, but be advised that it does get quite warm, I wonder if it will effect my Cd-R's over time.It is a little hefty in weight, and I really don't mind the extra, but the keyboard still sags when you type on it. If it were possible, I would prefer a unit in black, since this one is silver and the coating is already showing wear, ( and yes I do keep it in a padded case. ) I guess that my biggest complaint isn't with the unit but rather with the lack of support, but that is another story.

Hope this helps, Happy Thanksgiving everyone ....

It looks like the $300 from CompUSA is an internet only rebate.

I bought this laptop at CC a few weeks ago. CC messed up the pricematch with BB and took off an extra 150 or so. Anyway, with rebates it will come out to 650. Im very happy with that since i was expecting to pay about 950 =)

I think the laptop is great for the price. The backcover is a pain. The underneath does get moderately warm..but it feels good on these cool nights =)
The one thing that I do notice the most is the battery life. Its my first laptop so I dont really have anything to compare it to, but it runs out pretty quick...maybe 1 hr when playing games.

I havent had any problems with crashes etc. Runs great. Use it mainly for websurfing and playing games. It will do until I can afford an Alienware laptop.

Usually Ships within 7-10 Days
Shipping option: 1 business day
Transit time: 8-11 business days

Even if you pay for overnight shipping, it will be very unlikely you can get the $300 New Rochelle rebate in by the 12/12/02 postmark deadline if CompUSA holds true to their "8-11 business days" (i.e. excluding weekends) transit time.

Final price for me after tax and rebate would have been $736 (not including shipping).

Hmm. The second complaint about that door. The door is unnecessary and purely cosmetic so unless you tend to drop this in sand alot then dump that door. Remove 2 screws and its gone...

was a good deal only if you like to look at a 14" and wait for a slow CPU to finish that is when the battery is not dead...
* and who likes to pay tax, and people are not sure if the $300 MIR will go out in time... although I think CS should honor it even if it's post marked late)

staples and other places have sweet deals on better laptops, look if you are getting something like that it's worth paying $200 for a better screen + CPU + battery...

Sheesh. 14" screens arent good enough? a 1.2ghz AMD is considered a slow CPU? People should go and pay $200 more for something thats more to your liking?

Believe it or not, $650 for a 1.2ghz AMD/30GB HD/16MB ATI Radeon/14" Screen/DVD isnt a deal to be knocking. (Unless youre a snobby "mines faster than yours" guy)

I just received my laptop today from this deal, and it was actually a 1.33ghz XP1500+ processor instead of the promised 1400+.. makes the deal that much sweeter.
