Amazingly, the RioVolt sports a playback time of up to 10 hours on two AA batteries (included), making it the first disc player we know of that can't play a single CD in its entirety.
Ha ha, ho ho. That's from the Amazon.com Product Description. Somehow that's not a good sales pitch.

I called Amazon earlier in the day - they are NOT a participating retailer. The rebate, according to their sales rep, has already been figured in to that lower price (it's about $5 less than it's been in the past even after rebates). I couldn't get in touch with a live person at Rio...

Since SonicBlue (Rio, right??) went bankrupt, I'm not sure I'd count on a rebate anyway!

Their point was that a single MP3 CD can hold a music length over 20 hours. They said the battery life is 10 hours, and said it was the first player that can't play a whole CD. They were trying to show you that it can hold a LOT of music that it would take more than 4 batteries to listen to the whole CD. It may not be a good sales pitch for the battery company, but it's a valid sales pitch.

dunno what it meant to say but a playback time of 10 hrs is talking about battery life and not playtime length capacity of the media

One of my friends who has had this for over an year & half, said he was very unhappy with the sound quality. This wasn't a function of the headphones because he used a good pair. I think he even tried some firmware upgrades, but no improvement. He also found them to skip quite a bit.

Not to thread crap, but I bought this a while back from BestBuy and haven't been that happy with it. For one, it doesn't play any CD's any more. They spin, and then the CD player acts like there is no disc in it. And I had sound problems with it too, there was no consistency, some discs were loud and others were real quiet and hard to hear. Just my $0.02...

When in MP3 mode and the unit is advance reading the data into the "anti-skip" buffer, if the unit is bumped or moved, the "skip" will be read into the buffer memory. There is NO error-correction for reading or buffering.

If that's true, it's pretty dumb.
