same system or multiple systems?

i was wondering if this would be practical for a read/write combo.

currently have a old dvd-rom drive and was thinking, for the price, might be quicker ripping..

haha that maybe true, but honestly, how cheap do you expect a dvdburner to ever get?

there is always a pricepoint that the manufacturers stay above just to make profit, and though technology is constantly getting cheaper.
i believe the 50 dollar range is about the rock bottom when it comes to dvd burners.
future models will just come with new bells and whistles.
the 3520's only upgrade over the 3500 is the faster rw speeds.

anyways that just my thoughts.

Thanks, OP. Have wanted to get this for some time. Was mulling getting this or the BenQ. At $51, in black, with no sales tax, and free shipping at Monarch (for California) I had to do it. (Now if I can just figure out how to actually pay my credit card bill next month - continuing to rise from all the deals in this forum - that'd be great.)

One quick question: any suggestions on best free DVD software to use as the drive's OEM??? Any feedback would be much appreciated.

Again, thanks alot!

Everyone will be clearing this model because the new NEC 3530 or 3540 is supposed to be shipping this month. But of course the new drive will cost more so this is a good deal if you can't wait or don't need the newest features.

EDIT: Is the link above the correct info for the product coming out here, and, if so, how different is this???

Looks like the following changes:

DVD+R9 : 4x to 8x
CD-RW : 24x to 32x

Also it supports DVD-R DL. I think the 3520A initially did not, but a firmware update may have already taken care of that.

I though I may have read something about being able to flash a 3500 to 3520. Someone here maybe able to confirm this. Also check out CDfreaks.

I dunno RM, I've been reading some other info on some CDR-related sites, and the 3500 seems to have more 3rd-party firmware available for it, and there are some anecdotal reports that the 3500 may give slightly superior burns to the 3520, even though the 3520 is newer. One theory is that NEC essentially re-built a (newer) equivalent to the 3500, but using cheaper components, hence the 3520.

Personally, I'm actually still looking for a 3500 (in black), myself, I would rather one of those than a 3520. (I subscribe to the cut-cutting theory, I'd rather have the "well-built" model myself.)

I'm up in the air about the 3540 - faster DL burn speeds are a plus, but only if you plan to do a lot of DL burning. Due to media costs, I don't think that I likely ever will, as Blu-Ray is projected to drop below DVD DL media even. DVD DL is a dead-end road, for the mainstream, IMHO.

I'm still using an ND1300A (4x), and it keeps churning out decent burns, so I'm happy, although it would be nice if they would get finished a little faster than they do. Eventually, I'm afraid that it will become obsolete and useless anyways, as newer brands/speeds of media are introduced to the market, and NEC no longer releases any firmware to support that newer media, for this drive. Hopefully 3rd-party "hacked" firmware will remain in development.

Edit: btw, due to the fact that the two drives (3500 and 3520) do NOT use the same controller chip, it is NOT possible to "upgrade flash" them, don't even try.

VirtualLarry this place has the NEC ND 3500 for $60 + $10 shipping 🙁.

I've never heard of this vendor though. Just thought I'd throw it out there if you're still looking or are still interested in finding a 3500 with a black faceplate.
