I actually saw this deal yesterday and decided to pick it up since I also had a $40 gift cert hanging around. Great Price and even cheaper if you sell the game! I just sold my Strix GTX 980 for what I bought it for, so I will pocket the spare $$ and play with the 290X until the 3XX series comes out.

if I wanted to pair with a 7970, which is the correct version to get now?

You can't pair an R9 290/290X with a 7970. You will need an R9 280 or 280X (280X is the closest equivalent to the 7970). You might want to look at the used card market because a new 280X is way too expensive for the performance it offers.

That is very tempting. Prices coming down on 290X are making it very hard for me to wait for the 380X to come out.

It looks to be, yeah. I don't see the gift card, either.

This was pretty hot, though.

Been messing with mine today. Not the best overclocker on the core, seems to top out at 1135 with +100mv, after that I will eventually see some artifacts. Memory is Hynix though and does 6000Mhz without artifacts, 6200+ might be okay as well, but I need to test more.

Max temps I have seen when overclocked is 76C. Highest VRM temps is 75C. Fans are pretty quiet, even when ramped way up to 80%.

I recommend stick with XFX because of Lifetime Warranty.
I'm hoping my current XFX 5850 die soon enough to get free upgrade from XFX.
