Dead notebook

My dad's notebook died last night and I am thinking it is the result of a dead power supply but I figured I would ask on here.

It is a Gateway MX 8739 (just over a year old)....he said that he was surfing the internet and suddenly he heard a popping noise and perhaps a spark (he wasn't quite sure). At that point the notebook went blank and refuses to start up whatsoever since then.

Unfortunately it is not under warranty anymore; do you think this is indeed a power issue and does anyone know how much this might cost to fix / would it be worthwhile fixing?

Thanks.

Laptops don't have PSUs. They have power bricks that are easily replaceable.

If it was the power brick that went out then the Laptop would still run off the battery. Since it shut off and doesn't work then its not just the power brick. Sounds like something on the mainboard may have fried. In which case the laptop is finished. Check around and see if there is any sort of extended warenty or recall on that model. If this is a common problem with that model you may be able to get it fixed for little or nothing.

 Showcases my knowledge of notebooks.... :p

I guess he'll have to call up Gateway and see what they say. That's pretty sad though that a notebook suddenly dies after just over a year, and of course just after the warranty ends....
