R9 280 ~ R9 285

Computerbase has it outperforming the fastest GTX950 by 11%:

Sweclockers has it beating GTX950 by 19% at 1080P and just 1% slower than a $200 GTX960 4GB.

One of the few cards left in the ~$150-160 space with 3GB of VRAM.

Not guaranteed, but can overclock to 1150-1175mhz, at which point it's as fast as a GTX770/HD7970Ghz/280X.

Good deal.

To the extent the current sub-$200 market sucks right now because we've had $200-230 R9 290s last year and for months this year, as well as R9 280X has dipped as low as $150-160 too.

It's pretty crazy that towards the end of 2015, there are no 3-4GB cards below $180 regularly for sale. The mainstream level of VRAM is really lagging behind.

Still though R9 280 OC (~ HD7950 OC) is a ton of performance for $150, which used to be a $500 HD7970Ghz/GTX680/GTX770 4GB domain.

Crazy how fast older generations of GPUs drop in price over time if one is patient enough!

I remember around May-June 2012, a GTX680 4GB cost $580 on Newegg. Today an R9 280/380/960 4GB are about as fast for $150-200. :awe:

680 aged very poorly against the HD7950 V2 = R9 280. I remember by summer 2013 it was possible to buy an HD7950 V2 for $280 when GTX680 2GB was still $450 and GTX680 4GB was $530.

Ouch.

It is too bad the 280Xs completely ran out pretty much, they provided a lot of value in the sub-$200 segment for a while vs the GTX 960. It was more competitive than the 285 ever was. I have always thought the 280 non X was still better than either the 285 or the 960, and now that the 285 is almost toast the 280 is a clear better value overclock or not.

I really think 3GB is a sweet spot at 1080p for a while, we don't see much that goes past that without mods now.

It's still possible to buy an XFX R9 280X with lifetime warranty too for $190. And it still is the best gaming graphics card under $200 in terms of balance - 3GB of VRAM, faster than a GTX960/770 and is a safer bet for DX12 than a 960 is. ^_^

It's going to be fun to watch the exodus of GTX950/960/285 2GB upgraders when they finally admit that their card is worthless for 1080P gaming due to lack of VRAM -- we told you so! All it takes is 2-3 more major AAA games to bomb with 2GB of VRAM and those cards are paperweight as far as usability and resale value goes.

Good deal. I don't game much anymore, but I'm rocking a pair of HIS 7950 3GB cards. Maybe I should pick up two more of these, for my other two older rigs? Hmm.

Would a R9 280 be too much GPU for a Core2Quad @ 2.5Ghz? Should I instead get a 2GB 260X? (ebay via BestBuy for $79?)

Why do you need at least 3 gaming desktops? Have LAN parties at your house? I'd say you are better off having a solid primary system rather than 3 mid-range systems.

Yes, that's way too much. What kind of games do you plan to run on a C2Q @ 2.5Ghz? What CPU is that? Most C2Qs could overclock to 3.2-3.4Ghz.

Dang man I'm trying to get by on a single 7770. You're getting two of these for old rigs? :'(

Have you thought of selling the 7950s at some point and grabbing a single 290/390/290X/970? Might be worth it eventually because as games become more GPU demanding, FPS drops even more and the lower the FPS goes, the more micro-stuttering occurs on lower end GPUs like 7950/7970. It's the sad reality but eventually once 7950s/7970s can only manage 45-50 fps average in CF, their minimums will be so low that it won't feel as smooth as a single card at 45 fps.

If you don't game much anymore, it makes even more sense to sell at least one of those 7950s, while it at least has some value.

Nah. I do more DC than gaming, and the 7950 / 7970 / R9 280 / R9 280X have something like 1/8 DP, which is even better performance than the newer R9 290 / X for double-precision calculations.

Thanks! Looks like it's dead now, price up to $220 with rebate.

It's way better than that.

6970, 7950, 7970, 280X, etc. all have 1/4th, the 290 series has 1/8th
