OK see this thread on PocketPCThoughts.com for more info. In short, if you go to hp.com's educational section, you can get at least the national educational discount rate of $293 ($106 less than current retail price on the 2215), and for certain groups, as low as $267 (for example, i go to a school in the Massachusetts Higher Education Consortium, so i get mine for $267). It retails for $399, so that's 33% off the newest pocket PC on the shelves. By comparison, the huge Dell messup two weeks ago gave 15% + 15% + 5% stackable, less than 32% off when you do the math, so this is damn hot. Short instructions:
go to hp.com, click govt & education, higher ed -> student or teacher (whichever you are)-> state-> (your state here). Then select from the available contracts and pick the one that ends up giving you the lowest price on the 2210 that your school is a member of (if you're not sure your school belongs, Google it and you should be able to figure it out. if you can't, you shouldn't be in college, much less getting discounts for it ).
The 2210 is supposedly the same as the very well recieved 2215 (review) which was released this week with the new PocketPC 2003 OS. It's got a 400 mhz processor, 64 MB RAM, bluetooth, CF and SD expansion, SDIO, and an LED-backlit screen.
Oh and supposedly they HAVE been calling some people to check to make sure they really go to a college - so i wouldn't recommend fraud on this one
This is my first dealie, so if i'm violating some rule i didn't realize, i apologize - but this is too good!
EDIT: as of 6/30/03, the deal still seems to be going... i called HP to check on my order, and the CSR assured me my order should be confirmed today and ship no later than tomorrow, as the 2210s are in stock. If you can still jump in on this, go for it; it looks like it may actually work, price mistake and all.
EDIT: As of 7/1/03, it appears that the 2210 has disappeared from at least some if not all of the contract pages offering the $267 price. It's still available through the national educational discount (which i believe any college qualifies for) at $293, which is still not too shabby. Don't know how much longer that will last, though. HP does seem to honor these orders (if you're an actual higher ed student or employee), although they haven't gotten around to mine yet due to the massive backlog created by this deal, according to the CSR at HP that I talked to.
EDIT: As of 7/2, it appears that you can additionally get the $293 price in the K-12 public sector store, so a lot more of you should qualify.
EDIT: dead as of 7/24. Alas. It was nice while it lasted, and certainly stayed alive longer than anyone thought it would.
