I have 2 black ones and I have never been happier with a drive. If you even remotely need it, its a steal.

I would get a bunch if they came with at least a nero cd... but alas, NEC doesnt do such things with oem drives...

It's a newer, faster drive for just $6 more?

I was going to until I saw this for $6 less. But it is good you pointed it out for those who did not know.

Why get the one for $6 less? It has a great track record, and it will do everything I am likely to do with a DVD burner in the next couple of years, which is just an occasional something. A lot of people never use the burner they have after they fool with for a few weeks. If you are serious and constant user of burners, something more might be worthwhile.

Also, buying something new when it first shows up hardly ever works out well.

Awesome drive! Remember that while some 18x drives are on the market, speed isn't the key factor here - quality is. The 3550A is a proven and well trusted model and will serve you well.

The NEC 7071 write quality is just fine, comparable or better than of the NEC 3550.

Anyone know a good online review of the 7071? I do use a 3550 and can vouch that its a pretty good drive. Benq 1655 is better usually but the nec is very good. I wouldn't usually burn at 18x but I have some expectation that an 18x burner will burn better at 12x than a similar 16x. Sort of a quality headroom thing. Need to test for proof though

I have not seen the speeds on the drives going up for sometime now.
Have they reached the limit? Like the CPU's which Max out at 4.0GHz.

Or maybe they have stopped further development on the DVD Drives because of the HD-DVD and BlueRay.

Also The DVD-+RW, DVD R DL, and DVD-RAM prices have not come down or changed for a long long time.
Also I dont see any Double Sided DVD Media (not Dual Layer) These days. They came out a few years ago. With Dual Layer the Double Sided gives a whooping $17Gigs in one single Media.

All these are surely because of the upcoming new Format wars.
Anyway my personal opinion is that the DVD media itself will die, well it should have by now.

Aw man... I could have saved $6 if I had waited three more days for this deal...
